Music Promotion Online and Offline

Here are some suggestions on ways to promote yourself and your music:

*Business Cards- When talking to anyone, hand one out. You must include either the link to your website or to at least the best place that hosts your music (your Artistopia web link). Consider your link as your online business card. Example: http://www.artistopia.com/YOURBANDNAME
*Play for free if you have to, any where, any time. Create an event and donate the proceeds to a charity. "This can open up some interesting contacts and opportunities.
*Collect addresses, email addresses to keep your fan base current on what you are up to.
*Consider having a house concert.
*Create your own support group of family and friends- and communicate well with them on your plans and goals.
*Hand out your CDs. Have your web link printed on the CD.
*Print up a poster or flyers about your upcoming show and post it wherever your type of fans would hang out and include your web link, show date, name of CD, where CD can be purchased.
*Send press releases, reviews of your shows to local newspapers, magazines and event papers.
*Check your public and local radio stations that play your type of music and try to get some air time.
*Hand out your CD to club owners that feature your type of music.
*Get involved in the Artistopia web forums as well as other good, comfortable message boards and ALWAYS include your Artistopia link!! Example: http://www.artistopia.com/YOURBANDNAME
*Join online music groups and newsgroups.
*Give a review get a review, honestly is the best policy, but not brutality.
*Create a newsletter, if you are a decent writer, with content of value to the receiver.
*Online send out press releases and reviews of shows.
*Get online air play.
*Start a Blog, well written and kept current.
*Use internet class ads to promote upcoming events and possible collaborations with others.
*Create a banner to drop in your forum signatures or other online locations.
*Word of mouth has always been the best promotion. Get people talking about you.
*Be unique and interesting to look at in some way. Let people know you are professional and have star quality...build your image.
*Be innovative in your promotional efforts!

What is brand awareness?
Is the act of creating public awareness of a specific brand in order to maximize its recognition and successful brand awareness strategies should define a company's uniqueness and set it apart from any and all competitors. If potential customers don't know about a company, they will not purchase from that company.

For the Musician- the act of making the world aware of your name (band). Think of these single names: Cher, Madonna, Sting, Tupac, The Beatles.
You recognize each one and are aware of what each name represents. You could almost say it as BANDawareness". So a musician that wishes to be seen, heard, recognized, and to make a career in this business, needs to create a cost effective campaign to reach these goals. Your name must be EVERYWHERE.

Some additions to the list:

*There is a such thing as OVERKILL, in that it is better to describe your band/music as "we sound similar to the Beatles" rather than "we are the biggest thing since Led Zeppelin!". So word your description accordingly.
*Never spam email.
*Learn every area of the business you are in. Knowledge is power.
*Meet people, get out there and shake hands, and without overkill, let them know about your music.
*Be on friendly terms with other bands and artists in your area.
*Create a “street team”, whether online or offline…they are core people that wish to help you further your marketing efforts.
*Be persistent!

Suggests are just that, suggestions. You find what works for you and/or tweak any of the above. These are all tried and true marketing tips. The old motto of "who can promote you better than you?" ... is the whole basis of your name being on the streets. You never know who knows somebody that knows somebody that will be just the introduction you need.

A street team is a group of people (volunteers) that help you get out the word on you, your band, your music out there so more people will come to your shows. At first they were considered more as an offline team- the people that when a band they loved were performing in their town, they were the ones that went around and hung up the posters and handed out the flyers - they would do the footwork on getting word out on the band. Sort of a working fan club.

In return, some street teams are eligible to get some perks, like get into your show for free, merchandise, tickets, discounts, etc.

On the Internet, your e-Street Team could do the work online like hitting the local class ads, forums, newsgroups on getting the word out where your show will be. There are even newsgroups online for the "Street Team of ...." in which they hold contests, exchange ideas, etc.

How you get your volunteers, the people that want to help you get to the top is to build your fan base, is get people to sign up, which could start locally with family and friends. Collect emails, your fan base has to stay informed on what's new with your music. Got a gig coming up? Ask for help!

Much of the work can be done right from your Artistopia profile and your console. You get people to listen to you, because your music is great, and they have the option to be added to your fan list. You can communicate with your fans through you message boards. You can create a newsletter and ask for the fans to help spread the word.

No one said making it to the top of your game would be easy, but if you have people that believe in what you do and wish to help, USE THEM!

Hey Alanda-

A blog is an online journal (diary) that can be created by anyone, on any subject. When you update a blog you are said to be "blogging" and the person that keeps a blog is a "blogger". The best way to keep a blog, is to update it, if not daily, at least several times a week (search engines like fresh content). Blogs can be maintained and updated with little or no technical background, which is great news! Usually the postings are arranged in chronological order, meaning that the most recent content is featured first, and the older content is archived.

There are many good places across the net to start blogging, for free, here are just a couple:
Blogger http://www.blogger.com/start
Xanga http://www.xanga.com/

There are a lot of cool features that a musician can use, and it can be a useful tool to help promote your music (by of course leaving a link to your Artistopia profile!). And viewers are able to leave comments on what is written. There again, blogging can take time, and quality is usually more important than quantity.

Update to the list:

*Never mail your CD without a purpose or a contact person's name on it and expect miracles. Far better that the contact person knows to expect your CD, his or her name is spelled correctly, and you are mailing it to a company that actually works with your style of music.
*Wear your band! Get a jacket, t-shirts (etc) and add your band name or logo on it. Wear it everywhere and be a walking advertisement.

The Internet runs on text, content, search engines and links. I can not emphasize enough about using your signature in these forums, or any where you post your music, promote yourself, etc...to ADD a link to your music AND short description. Everywhere you go on the Internet, you can and should use as a promotional point for yourself and your music...and be very precise about every keystroke to present yourself in the most beneficial manner.

Let me give you an example. Our Artistopia Music Resource Directory is a searchable directory, much like Google. It is searchable by alphabetical, keyword or by name. Many times, someone will add something along these lines:
Title: Official website of Example band
Description: Official website of Example band

How would anyone possibly find this band on the Internet, unless they already know what they are looking for? A much better way to do it could be:
Title: Example band - Los Angeles Rock Band
Description: Official web site of LA based rock and roll band Example. This hard rocking foursome of Tony A, Fred B, Sam C and Mike D offer you music samples, bios, photos and contact information....

...well, you get the idea. THINK of the best possible way to promote yourself always.

Another point is titling your MP3 files tags. If you are offering your music as a music download, it is far better to start with your NAME, not the name of your song. What would you wish someone to remember most about what they just listened to?

Tip: Songwriting Circle
This is a local idea (though it is possible through the Internet), to meet with other songwriters in your own area and share your songs. You can get feedback on your work, share ideas and tips, possibly collaborate on work, learn about what's happening locally, help each other in many ways.
If you wanted to start your own circle or look for one, you could use Craiglist for your Wanted or Needed post. Most ask that you be open minded and dedicated, with a willingness to listen and give feedback.
