Dear Members of the International Olympic Committee:
Growth and progress in the context of human rights, is now the focus of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. China, a Communist country currently omitted from the G7, is focusing global attention on the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, 25 November 1997: 52/21: Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal:
Reaffirming that the Olympic ideal promotes international understanding, particularly among the youth of the world, through sport and culture in order to advance the harmonious development of humankind,
In August, 20,000 Tibetans marched in support of Human Rights as a part of the Global Human Rights Torch Relay and President George Bush presented the Dalai Lama with US Congressional Gold Medal (Dalai Lama Is Honored on Capitol Hill, New York Times, 17 October 2007).
It would be a tremendous historical moment, if freedom for the people of Tibet could be realized prior to the start of the 2008 Olympics, and I would like to submit a request that the Dalai Lama light the Olympic flame at the Opening ceremonies.
In the hope of progress.......
