As the EMBRACE 2007 Global Campaign moves into full gear, U.S. and NATO troops are on the front lines of a global movement that encompasses the call for leaders in every UN member country to embrace the objective of poverty alleviation. I have included the song "The Soldiers Tear" into my personal Christmas compilation, because our troops are on the front lines in these regions, embracing the reality of pain, suffering and need.
As we move into 2008, it is our prayer that humanitarian missions become the new functional role of the armed forces. In the forefront of concern this holiday season:
* As our children write their Christmas wish lists to Santa and we struggle through crowds to find the perfect presents, across the world in Darfur, people are fighting to stay alive. -- All we want for Christmas, Mirror UK, 14 December 2007.
* Sudan has still not agreed to non-African troops or unrestricted night flights for the new 26,000-strong peacekeeping force for Darfur that is expected to take over on Jan. 1, a senior U.N. official said Thursday. -- UN Official: Sudan Hampering New Force, AP - United Nations, 14 December 2007.
May those who have profited during this unprecidented financial market period, channel those resources into the humanitarian emergencies (ReliefWeb: Countries & Emergencies) and 3.3 billion (over half of the earths population) who live in extreme poverty (UN Millenium Project: Poverty Facts and Figures):
* Every year six million children die from malnutrition before their fifth birthday. * More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day...300 million are children. * Of these 300 million children, only eight percent are victims of famine or other emergency situations. More than 90 percent are suffering long-term malnourishment and micronutrient deficiency. * More than 2.6 billion people-over 40 per cent of the world's population-do not have basic sanitation, and more than one billion people still use unsafe sources of drinking water.
We would like to extend a personal request to all troops and humanitarian workers on the front lines, to spread the news about EMBRACE 2007, the "They Will Know It's Christmas" music compilation and advocacy work being put forth on their behalf.
