Volunteerism: You Can Change the World

Published on 2/1/2008
By Stephen M. Apatow
Few know that Humanitarian Resource Institute is a 100% volunteer organization. Since 1994, mission has been prioritized over economics. Instead of a business model built on the suffering and afflicted, our focus has been to expand the reach of Humanitarian Resource Institute's mission "To Bridge Unmet Needs to Untapped Resources." The cost has been great, but the only way that progress could be made in a world where economics many times is used as a weapon rather then a resource.

Our current goals encompass:

1. The formation of Grassroots Action Teams: Individuals and teams of leaders to conduct academic photo, video and print presentations for strategic planning and development, organizational integration and media impact.

Efforts to put a face on the size and scope of the needs that exist is the global communications strategic objective to optimize grassroots real time communication capability. "The world cannot respond, if the world does not know." Citizen Journalism and reporting is the first step to global awareness and response, resources to spread the message include:

* Yahoo: You Witness News
* YouTube Nonprofit Program
* MySpace TV
* MAP: Global Media Contact Information and Email Directory

Once educational materials and reports are compiled, the next step is to get the word out by setting up an unmet needs network (fax, email, postal) to all churches, interfaith organizations, youth leadership programs, volunteer programs, corporate networks and media outlets (newspaper, radio and television). -- America's Action Plan for Community Service, Humanitarian Resource Institute.

Humanitarian Resource Institute and partnership organizations can engage the decision making level, humanitarian advocates and newspaper, radio and television networks across the globe. This historical moment represents our first step toward being a connected global community, that includes the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

2. Goodwill Ambassadors: Members of the arts and entertainment industry that will help focus international attention on "Grassroots Action Teams" and the mission theme: "The world cannot respond, if the world does not know."

To date, 2008 Humanitarian Resource Institute Goodwill Ambassadors include:

-- Robert Malone: Actor/Writer/Director (IMDB), MySpace. Foundation: KidCare (MySpace).
-- Wayne Warner: Singer, Songwriter, Award-Winning Director, Founder of Melodical Hearts, Official Web Site, YouTube Channel, MySpace. God Bless The Children: HRI Arts Integration Into Education Spotlight.

As a part of our leadership development focus, I would like to present some thoughts from Wilfred A. Peterson:

The Art of Leadership (Paraphrase)

Simply and plainly defined, a leader is an individual who has followers. The leader deserves to have followers, They have earned recognition. Authority alone is no longer enough to command respect.

The leader is a great servant. The Master of Men expressed the ideal of leadership in a democracy when he said, "and whosoever will be the chief among you, let him be your servant."

The leader sees things through the eyes of their followers. They put themselves in their shoes and help make their dreams come true.

Leaders don't say, "Get going,!" Instead they say, "Let's go!" and lead the way. They do not walk behind with a whip, but are out in front with a banner.

The leader assumes that their followers are working with them, not for them.

They considers them partners in the work and see to it that they share in the rewards. They glorify the team spirit.

The leader duplicates themselves in others. They are people builders. They helps those under them grow big because they realize that the more big men and women an organization has, the stronger it will be.

The leader does not hold people down, They lift them up. They reach out their hand to help their followers scale the peaks.

The leader puts faith in people, believes in them, trusts them and this draws out the best in them. They have found that people rise to their high expectations.

The leader uses their heart as well as their head... after they look at the facts with their head, they let the heart take a look too.

The leader is a self starter. They create plans and set them into motion. They are people of thought and action -- both a drummer and doer.

The leader has a sense of humor, they are not a stuffed shirt, they can laugh at themselves. They have a humble spirit.

The leader can be led. They are not interested in having their own way, but in finding the best way. They have an open mind.

The leader keeps their eyes on high goals. They strives to make the efforts of their followers and themselves contribute to the achievement of personality, the achievement of more abundant living for all and the civilization.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead
