Apatow: No Joke -- Stephen Michael Apatow that is

Published on 4/5/2008
By Stephen M. Apatow
In Southern California, the name Apatow is recognized via IMDB Judd Apatow and Connecticut singer, songwriter, Stephen Michael Apatow, founder of the non governmental organization Humanitarian Resource Institute (btw, no relation). Stephen is known for his recent soundtrack "The Eagle Will Rise," progressively moving toward #1 on the Independent Country Music Charts (Artistopia), in conjunction with the national campaign Stand Up for America (Arts Integration Into Education, MySpace Music, 28 March 2008).

If you want to know who in the entertainment industry is leading global humanitarian relief operations, go to Yahoo and search: humanitarian. Next, look for Humanitarian Resource Institute.

Following the development of the International Disaster Information Network in 1999, the Year 2000 Conversion presented the first opportunity for Humanitarian Resource Institute to focus on a global infrastructure stabilization initiative that encompassed over 195 United Nations member countries.

Since the Year 2000, we have watched the international community spiral into crisis, due to the prioritization of geoeconomic progress over the protection of vulnerable populations. The challenge of bureaucracy and conflict of interest now complicate the ability of the United Nations to fulfill the mandates outlined in it's charter.

One example is the fundamental preservation of public health. In the paper "International Law, Communicable Diseases and the Geopolitical Objective of Minimal Interference with World Trade and Travel," we read:

Public health is no longer the prerogative of physicians and epidemiologists. International health law, which encompasses human rights, food safety, international trade law, environmental law, war, and weapons, human reproduction, organ transplantation, as well as a wide range of biological, economic, and sociocultural determinants of health, now constitutes a core component of global communicable disease architecture.

The challenge of global health governance through legally binding and "soft-law" regimes is negotiated and adopted within the mandate of multilateral institutions -- the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Office International des Epizooties (OIE). Broad consensus must also be achieved with member states and other international organizations that include the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

During this last week, Stephen was interviewed by a reporter from Excelsior in Mexico City, who discussed widespread concern about contingencies that would press to annihilate infected people along with infected domestic animals. He spent considerable time, discussing ecosystemic variables associated with emerging infectious diseases and the importance of infrastructure optimization for public health, including preventative measures that would help populations better cope with these challenges.

Under United Nations oversight, during the last eight years, we have (1) watched the global public health infrastructure and (2) the global financial system (HRI Analysis Input: Stop Pretending, Financial Week, 31 March 2008) transition into a crisis.

We are in a crucial period, where advocacy work on the grassroots level in every United Nations member country must be prioritized (Citizen Journalism: You Can Change the World) including leadership development and communication capability. Our current focus includes:

The formation of Grassroots Action Teams: Individuals and teams of leaders to conduct academic photo, video and print presentations for strategic planning and development, organizational integration and media impact.

Efforts to put a face on the size and scope of the needs that exist is the global communications strategic objective to optimize grassroots real time communication capability. "The world cannot respond, if the world does not know." Citizen Journalism and reporting is the first step to global awareness and response, resources to spread the message include:

* Yahoo: You Witness News
* YouTube Nonprofit Program
* MySpace TV
* MAP: Global Media Contact Information and Email Directory

Once compiled, reports disseminated to Humanitarian Resource Institute and partnership organizations will facilitate engagement of the intergovernmental decision making level, humanitarian advocates, newspaper, radio and television networks in conjunction with integration into IRIN Humanitarian Country Reports.
