TOMI: A Hot Talent Ready to Take the Music World by Storm

Published on 7/3/2007
By Paul Sorkin
Chicago’s Rosehip Records is proud to introduce their newest unique talent, TOMI, to the world. Both share the same philosophy of going with the vision in your soul—without compromising. IMAGE had an opportunity to find out more about this signer/songwriter, producer, and multifaceted musician.

How did you get started in the music industry?

I started back home in Europe as a kid. My brothers pulled me into music at early age. Luckily, I was comfortable with music and a lot of things came to me naturally. I started playing piano, guitar, writing, and singing all at once.

I was able to broaden my music horizons by my extended family who would visit from the U.S. They brought a lot of music and videos. This was my window into the American music culture, and I realized that I wanted to be a part of it. So one day I packed my bags and left a pretty promising music carrier in my country [Slovakia] and came to Chicago. I started from nothing all over again, taking baby steps like a kid. Eventually, I ended up signing with Chicago’s own Goran Rajsic, a good friend and mentor, and his label, Rosehip Records. He’s provided the best and most comfortable opportunity to finish my first record and that’s complete, 100% artistic freedom, which today’s music industry does not offer anymore.

Who are your favorite entertainers today?

My favorite entertainers today are people from the old school and today, like Prince, Sting, Usher, R. Kelly, John Mayer.

Who were your musical influences?

My influences range from Mozart to Prince; Earth, Wind & Fire; Stevie Wonder; Pat Metheny; R. Kelly; The Beatles. I was brought up listening to soul, funk, jazz, R& B.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is very fresh, soulful, sexy, romantic, deep, sensual, versatile, funky, and nostalgic at times. I tried to capture all the emotions we experience everyday in one album.

What makes you unique?

What I think makes me unique is my approach. I am not trying to be someone I am not. I am myself at all times—good or bad, happy or sad—and you can hear it in the music. What makes me unique is my sound. I didn’t go to the studio with four writers and five different producers. I did it myself.

You play multiple instruments, write, produce, and sing. What is your best talent?

My best talent, I feel, is having the ability to be able to do all those things together. I hear a song; I’m able to write it, record it, sing it, and produce it. I have the full package. That, to me, is the best talent someone could have. I do take pride in being a one-man band. But, of course, it came from God; I just embraced it.

You’ve worked with some greats like Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, the Backstreet Boys, and a lot more. Who was the most impressive to work with and why?

It was interesting working with the Backstreet Boys cuz I’m not into the whole boy band thing. It was cool to see them act like real people, but the most impressive to work with was Patti LaBelle, a legend. She was so humble and nice. She can sing her ass off and has a reason to act like a snob but she was the opposite: respectful, a human being, and a bomb singer.

If you could work with anyone living or dead, who would it be and why?

I would love to work with Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and a whole bunch of people I look up to from the past. I would also love to work with Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. I love real, raw talent not weak, manufactured artists.

What should your fans expect from this first album?

Expect to hear good music. Expect the best. Even if you don’t like my style of music or the way I look or something else, you will find at least one song on this record that you like, whoever you are. I tried to make a hot album for all ages, from the kids to the grown-ups, girls or guys, black or white, it don’t matter. In the times when there isn’t much good music out today, I think I nailed it. I am very proud that we are pushing this record out of my second home, which is Chicago. Expect to hear it on Chicago radio this month and then throughout the world.

What is the name of the album and why?

The name of the album is Blue-Eyed Soul and here is why. Blue-eyed soul is a term used to describe R&B or soul music performed by white people. So I figured this would be the best way to describe me.

How do you define sexy?

Sexy is us. The things we do, how we act, the way we are. Sexy is something you can’t fake. Everyone could be sexy if they wanted to, but you can’t try so hard to be sexy. We are sexy to others even if we don’t feel like being sexy at the time. You don’t have to be hot or feel hot to be sexy.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Because I do what I like the most, there is a blur between my work and “free time.” I love spending time with my lovely girl. I like traveling, eating, sleeping, and touching.

How can readers find out more about your music, news about the album, and upcoming performances?

Right now we are finishing the album’s artwork, and I started rehearsing with my band, so we are pushing my songs on Chicago radio. If you hear a song you like, request it on your local station and support your boy. I will start performing soon in the area.
