Album Summary
A good collection of authentic boogie-woogie pianists must include the holy trinity -- Albert Ammons, Meade "Lux" Lewis, and Pete Johnson. They are here, but not identified on the individual tracks, which is unnecessarily irritating. One assumes they spli
These three pianists popularized the rhythmically rambunctious style of piano-playing known as boogie woogie, and with more than 25 tracks between them, this import offers a great overview. Ammons and Johnson duet on most of the tracks (Walkin' the Boogie, Sixth Avenue Express, etc.), but all three take solo turns, as well as joining together for a poundin' Jumpin' Blues. Some of these pianists' finest tracks, from Carnegie Hall concerts & rare MacGregor transcription discs, remastered from original discs & acetates.
Albert Ammons is rightly feted as the King of Boogie Woogie. America's Boogie Woogie craze of the late 30's and early 40's was originally in the hands of a few Black pianists before the big bands got a hold of the style and developed it into the biggest music craze the world had then seen. Here are 36 of Albert Ammons' greatest recordings on a fantastic double CD set, recorded between 1939 and 1949 mostly in Chicago. On many of these tracks Albert is accompanied by his son Gene Ammons generally acknowledged as one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in Jazz history.

Featuring the piano boogie woogie triumvirate: Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson in more 1939 Sherman Hotel (Chicago) recordings. The liner notes to Boogie Woogie Stomp said 'Their blend of traditional blues and boogie with a good dose of swing created an impeccable drive, and there is more than just a hint of the rock 'n' roll years to come...you can hear boogie woogie on the loose, played by the greatest masters at the time of their public 'arrival' when everything was new and fresh'. Also features the primitive genius of 'Cripple' Clarence Lofton and Speckled Red.
