2009 release from the New Orleans legend. On The Bright Mississippi Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first Jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic Rock 'N' Roll sides. Backed by an all-star combo that sounds like a group of old friends, Toussaint reinterprets classic Jazz and Blues tunes popularized or written by such New Orleans greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe King Oliver, as well as pieces composed by fellow travelers Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. He accedes the producer's chair to trusted friend Joe Henry, who sat behind the board for Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, Nonesuch Records' best-selling 2005 benefit disc aiding Katrina hurricane victims.

1972's Life, Love and Faith was Toussaint's first album for Warner Reprise. While a soul record through and through, this effort from the multi-talented New Orleans native shares some of the singer/songwriter vibe of his contemporary label-mates, such as Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Lowell George and Little Feat. Stand out tracks include Soul Sister, Victims Of The Darkness and On Your Way Down. First domestic CD release. Original artwork. New detailed liner notes.
This CD restores to catalogue Toussaint's second album - the first that he released under his own name - titled originally "Toussaint", then renamed "From A Whisper To A Scream" - augmented with the A- and B-sides of three Bell 45s from 1968 and 1969. Five of these have never been reissued in 35+ years.Originally released on vinyl on Scepter Records in 1970, New Orleans' eminent musical genius's solo LP was largely overlooked at the time but is nowadays considered to be a real masterpiece of Crescent City Soul.

Album Summary
Without Allen Toussaint, New Orleans' crucial musical transition from blazing 1950s rock and roll to the second-line funk grooves of the 60s might have fizzled out altogether. As the Crescent City's preeminent producer, arranger, composer, and session pianist, his visionary contributions provided the seminal bridge to a new sound for a new decade. Toussaint's creative muse was at its zenith during those carefree days at Minit/Instant and Sansu/Deesu. 'It was quite a university,' he says. 'It was heaven. We had a free rein to try anything, and as much as we wanted to.' The 14 tracks on this album represent that glory period in Toussaint's history. Many of these songs have never been on CD in North America. Toussaint is still going strong today. Since Hurricane Katrina uprooted him from his beloved Crescent City, Toussaint has toured more than ever. 'I just love writing, and it seems to even embellish more as time goes on,' says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who had more to do with the modernization of New Orleans R&B than anyone else. This album is a piece of history that will never be repeated or duplicated.
