Grammy, Tony, Emmy Award-winning recording artist Barry Manilow will release 15 MINUTES his powerful new album filled with all original compositions on June 14.

After having recorded six critically acclaimed albums of songs written by the greatest songwriters of all time - from Gershwin to Bacharach, Manilow returns at last to his true passion - songwriting. Manilow teams up once again with lyricist Enoch Anderson for this astounding new work.

Inspired by the Andy Warhol quote that "in the future, everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes," this energetic and exciting guitar-driven pop album explores the perils and pinnacles of fame's double-edged sword. More than two years in the making 15 MINUTES is set for release on June 14.

Making a guest appearance on 15 MINUTES is young Nataly Dawn, lead singer of the white-hot group "Pomplamoose." Her rendition of "Letter From A Fan" is both innocent and eerie.

In terms of both record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. Unlike many of his peers, Manilow wasn't aiming to make smooth, restrained background music -- he conceived of himself as a pop entertainer and all-around showman in the classic mold, and his performances and stage shows were accordingly theatrical.

Manilow dominated pop music during the latter half of the '70s like few other performers, spinning off a long series of hit singles (including 13 number one hits on the adult contemporary charts) and platinum albums that essentially made the Arista label. By the early '80s Manilow was free to explore his long-held taste for swing, pop standards, and Broadway show tunes, which dominated his albums from the mid-'80s on. He has continued to record steadily, and his popularity never completely eroded.

Manilow has performed with countless artists from all around the world at Benefits, Special Events/Appearances & television programs, and of course, in concert. Now, for the first time, a collection of Manilow s duets are available on CD. Included are the warm, low-key 'I Won't Be the One to Let You Go' with Barbra Streisand, the jazzy 'Epilogue' with Nancy Wilson and the epic ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" with Debra Byrd.

The story Barry Manilow, his friends and associates tell in the liner notes to his four-CD/one-VHS box set retrospective The Complete Collection And Then Some... is about a contemporary pop songwriter who is reluctantly transformed into an interpretive singer; becomes an easy-listening, commercial pop superstar to his surprise (and, to some extent, dismay); and, through travail, reclaims his original vision by writing and performing neo-classic pop with tinges of jazz and show music. The trouble with this story is that when you play the album, you still hear a lot of earnest, piano-based romantic ballads, the singer's own tunes virtually indistinguishable from those of others. David Martin, co-author of "Can't Smile Without You," frankly admits that he stole the song's title from a greeting card, but Manilow's own lyric collaborators don't dig much deeper. Manilow's real talents lie in arrangement -- he always puts in enough modulations, tempo shifts, and instrumental development to maintain interest -- and in his singing, which retains sincerity and some buoyancy despite the unrelieved plaintiveness of the melodies and lyrics.

Like other box sets assembled in the early '90s, The Complete Collection And Then Some... tipped the scales more toward unreleased material. There were a few newly recorded songs, and a few that had been left off Manilow's regular albums, but the bulk of the previously unreleased material consisted of live performances, demos, and alternate takes. Many of the big hits are only heard in alternate versions, meaning that this was aimed at Manilow fans for whom the original demo of "Mandy," on which the singer accidentally sang "Brandy" (the song's original title), was more valuable. The set also included an hour-long video, Barry Manilow Performances, Volume One: The Highlights, which employed footage from Manilow's television appearances of the 1970s and '80s. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
