Album Summary
Onetime hip-hop representatives for the black boho intelligentsia, Brand Nubian--made up of the core quartet of Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo--disbanded in 1990 before reuniting in 1998 for this album. While all the artists have successfully survived apart, their chemistry together still works wonders. With its odd mix of black-power politics, feel-good party songs, and straight lyrical bravado, Foundation surprisingly emerges as one of 1998's better rap albums. Brand Nubian invigorate everything from dance tracks ("Back Up off the Wall") to underground gems ("The Return"). They even manage to update James Brown's anthem "I'm Black and I'm Proud" while sounding less dated than you'd expect. --Oliver Wang

Album Summary
Brand Nubian formed after Grand Puba's original group, Masters Of Ceremony, split up. Their first single "Brand Nubian" dropped in 1989 and their debut album, "One For All", was released in 1990. Critically acclaimed, the album drew fire for militant rhetoric on tracks like "Drop the Bomb" and "Wake Up." The video for the single "Wake Up" was also banned from MTV. The singles "Slow Down", "All For One" and "Wake Up" all became hits on Billboard's Hot Rap Tracks chart in 1991. After pursuing individual careers, Grand Puba, Lord Jamar, Sadat X and DJ Alamo reunited in 1997 after contributing a song to the "Soul in the Hole" soundtrack, titled "A Child Is Born" as well as releasing the underground single "Rockin It." The success of both songs propelled the group to record their second album with all four original members. Most people believed that the album entitled "The Foundation" from 1998 was their reunion album, but it is in fact the "Time's Running Out" album, unheard and shelved until now that would lead the quartet back into the recording studio to recapture and reclaim the iconic sound of the "One For All" album. Featuring production handled by Puba, Jamar, Alamo with help from DITC legend Lord Finesse and Slick Rick producer/DJ Vance Wright, this is must have for Brand Nubian and the vintage Hip Hop collectors in general.

Album Summary
Alongside acts such as Public Enemy and X-Clan, the Brand Nubian quartet (DJ Alamo and MCs Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar) helped introduce a whole new generation to Five-Percenter philosophies and conscious pride. Their 1990 debut was filled with the smooth production and syrupy flows that made the Nubian brand of Afrocentricity accessible and funky. Singles "All for One," "Slow Down," and "To the Right" highlight One for All, though some of the album's up-tempo efforts sound a little dated; "Wake Up," "Step to the Rear," and "Drop the Bomb" also shine. Alongside the wit and wisdom, though, the Nubian trio dropped some lyrical gaffes as well. Throughout One For All, there are plenty of unfortunate references to "hittin' skins," "cave-dwellin'" Caucasians, and hardcore homophobia. Despite its weaker moments, One for All is still one of the most impressive and definitive documents from hip-hop's "conscious" era. --Hua Hsu
