This collection documents the hits of country music icon Buck Owens as he defined the Bakersfield sound and became a major architect of west coast country overall.
Today he's heralded as a traditionalist who rejected the Nashville Sound's pop-rock concessions, but the real secret behind Owens's enormous success is that he embraced rock & roll more completely than any other country contemporary. The 16 hits here trace Owens and his Buckaroos as they move from more rural-sounding hits such as "Under Your Spell Again" to the rockabilly-inspired rhythms (Owens backed Gene Vincent for awhile) of his driving "freight train" sound, a series of classic singles that always sounded modern, electric, and decidedly urban. Volume 1 barely scratches the surface, but if you've never had your heart skip a beat when Don Rich cranks that driving electric lead to "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," then you've just got to hear this. --David Cantwell
Buck Owens: All-Time Greatest Hits also includes the rare original version of "Streets Of Bakersfield," (re-recorded 15 years later by Buck and Dwight Yoakam and a #1 hit). Not only is this definitive collection packed with signature songs and rarities omitted from previous best-of collections, but it won't disappoint his casual fan with 13 #1 hits like "Act Naturally," "Love's Gonna Live Here," "Together Again," "Sam's Place," "My Heart Skips A Beat," and "Before You Go."
This 1953-56 pre-Capitol collection rounds up the early cuts Buck made after moving to Bakersfield but before he became a star. These raw honky-tonk gems include Hot Dog; I'm Gonna Blow; Blue Love; There Goes My Love; Honeysuckle; Right After the Dance; Rhythm and Booze , and more including lots of alternate takes!
