Let Go by Sheila Walsh Submitted on: 2009-11-03 |

I should probably recuse myself from writing this book review solely based on how fond I am of Sheila Walsh. I have attended a few Women of Faith conferences where she speaks and she strikes me as the real deal-genuine, refreshingly honest and personal, and incredibly likeable. But all bias aside, her newest book, Let Go, is a great addition to any library. In this book, she addresses those things that hinder us in our relationship with God; those things that separate us from the unfathomable, unconditional, and unending love of our Father for us. Walsh acknowledges that women these days are often overly burdened with things such as shame, unforgiveness, and enslavement to our desires. In fact, she shares some of her own burdens throughout this book. Then, through Scripture and sound biblical advice, she shows the reader how to let them go.
Some highlights and powerful moments for me:
"Jesus left all the glory that was his and embraced all the brokenness and sin that is ours so that we can be free-truly free."
"If my hope is in anything else apart from Jesus, then it is too small. He is the answer to everything I need or anticipate. He is my deepest desire even when I don't immediately recognize that. He is my yesterday, today, and tomorrow. When everything else fails, he will not. When everyone else fails, he will not. . .When I have no grace for myself, he does. When I don't know what to do anymore, he does. Do you see how securely your life is tucked into the very hand of the One who holds the universe in place?"
Let Go is a comforting read in a disconcerting time. I recommend it to all who are hoping to let go of their burdens and fall into Jesus' arms.

Goes To The Heart of What's Holding Us Back Submitted on: 2009-10-24 |
|
I think everybody gets a few bumps and bruises in their journey through life ... and they're the lucky ones! Sheila Walsh's "Let Go" ... live free of the burdens all women know ... goes to the heart of what holds us back. Whilst this book is aimed at women I don't see it as being relevant just to women. The reality is that we all carry burdens ... and unless we can get free of them, as time goes on, more get added and before we know it, we're so weighted down, we wonder why we don't seem to be going anyway.
Recently when I was having coffee with a friend she shared something of the challenges she was facing and what struck me was how in the midst of all that, her response was to lean in closer to God, and hang on more tightly to Him. I see Sheila's "Let Go" helping to teach us just that ... acknowledging the past. Acknowledging that the pain is real, but then looking up and seeing something bigger, something greater and taking the steps towards that. I think that's probably the thing that I got most out of this book. Often we get so bogged down, looking down, into the detail. But if we could just look up and see the bigger picture, then we probably wouldn't sweat the small stuff so much, because the bigger picture would be what filled out lives and inspired us. Letting go of the burdens should be a matter of course.
I found this to be an enjoyable read. The chapters have been written as individual studies and there's time to reflect and ponder and I think you have to do that if you want this book to really make a difference, rather than just be a good read.

Hanging On By Letting Go Submitted on: 2009-10-22 |

"I will deliver you."
Sheila Walsh, Women of Faith speaker, opened her book with these words from God spoken in her spirit. She felt "discouraged and bone weary." Just like so many of us women at so many times in our lives.
She needed "more peace about the issue." So she began a "quest to study and understand what it means to be delivered."
A sense of frustration dogged my reading in the beginning because I wanted Sheila to "bleed." I wanted to know exactly what struggle, what issue required deliverance.
I continued to read in my usual manner with pencil in hand, marking statements that spoke to me or seemed to relate to the theme of letting go.
Stuff like...
* Accepting what is enables us to embrace a different future.
* What should have happened did.
* When we are unable to forgive or refuse to forgive, we become hostages to the pain of the past.
* Forgiveness unclenches our fists and allows us to let go.
* The most difficult person to forgive can be the one we see in the mirror every morning.
* Resting in the love of God means letting go of all the broken pieces we cling to and clinging instead to him.
* It's hard to fall off a pedestal when you are washing someone's feet.
* Guilt tells me I've done something wrong. Shame tells me I am something wrong.
* If I place my hope in anything or anyone other than Jesus, I will be disappointed.
And then she bled. She shared the story. And the intense spiritual struggle. And wise words from a child.
And what seemed disjointed (which is often the way of healing) and all of my markings came together. And carried more meaning.
Sometimes in order to hang on, we have to let go.
Thank you, Sheila, for being open and vulnerable. For letting go of the need to protect yourself. We've all been there in some form, and your overcoming gives us hope.

Forgiveness is Powerful but this book is NOT Submitted on: 2009-10-20 |

Forgiveness is powerful. Learning to forgive and loose your strongholds will set you free. Often times the sadness of the world news, difficulties in life and feelings of self-hate create a burden that is too heavy to carry. Walsh encourages women to read the word and let God take over. Walsh uses her life to serve as the illustration of how forgiving can free you.
The spiritual quotes and bible scriptures offer critical reflection while asking inquisitive questions about your life. This book is more self-help than the biblical teaching. After reading several self-help books, I was looking for more creative ideas, varying examples and real life examples about the difficulty in forgiveness. I got more from the quotes and scriptures listed at the beginning of each chapter than her narrative.
