THE angriest album ever made Submitted on: 2009-08-27 |
|
Look -- Any punk fan knows and loves pre-Rollins Black Flag, right?
But face it: This album is the angriest record ever made!
Metallica can just breastfeed on the anger in this album. People get hung up on the sarcastic, "funny" songs like TV Party and Six Pack, but the rest of the album is just pure, unadulterated rage.
Greg Ginn's guitar work on this album has never - NEVER - been matched on any punk, hardcore, or metal record. Utterly genius in it's always-nearly-out-of-control screeching, wailing dissonance. It's on "Damaged" that Ginn shows that he was one of the most brilliant guitarists (and songwriters) of the past 30 years. TOTALLY underappreciated.
And while all the pre-Rollins fanatics say how much better Keith or Dez or Chavo were, they are in utter denial when talking about this record. Forget the Rollins you know now, the self-proclaimed rock-n-roll spokesman and TV talking-head: This is Rollins as the Angriest-Man-Alive. The greatest screams ever recorded, and gut-wrenching, HONEST performances that just reach into your heart, pull it out, and crush it.
All these faux, corporate-friendly "punk" bands should just listen to this record once...and then call it quits. |

Classic punk rock sound Submitted on: 2009-08-06 |
|
Damaged by Black Flag contains the hits Six Pack and the upbeat TV Party. The songs on this album sound for the most part like classic punk rock, similar to The Sex Pistols, The Exploited, Fear, DOA, The Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Seven Seconds, and The Circle Jerks. This album is considered one of Flag's best, if not the best. It's not my personal favorite, but it ranks high on my list. Most of the songs are very fast and short - typical punk rock.
Best tracks: Rise Above, Spray Paint, Six Pack, TV Party, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Depression, Room 13, Damaged II, No More, and Damaged I.
I highly recommend this album if you like vintage punk rock. |

The perfect album that builds up to it's perfect ending Submitted on: 2009-04-29 |
|
Black Flag's Damaged is, to say the least, the perfect hardcore album and easily one of the best albums ever recorded. With Henry Rollin's raspy, abrasive vocals and Greg Ginn's intense guitar work and dissonant solos and fills, Damaged is a 35 minute wall of sound and pure unadulterated anger and energy.
The entire album is one long build-up that leads to it's extraordinarily intense release at the end. It introduces the album with the anthem "Rise Above" and punk-friendly songs "Spray Paint" and "Six Pack" to simply reel us in. Then, immediately afterward, almost like a foreshadowing of what's to come, we're hit the fierce "What I See", a song that showcases how intense Henry Rollins vocals really can be. But, as though the nightmare had never happened, the very comical and light-hearted "T.V. Party" follows.
But, it seems as though "T.V. Party" is nothing more than an intermission as the more intense "Thirsty and Miserable" comes in, followed by the high energy and angry "Police Story". And this is where the album really begins to build more pressure and anger as the indescribable pair of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and "Depression" (the latter being the single most intense song of the first half of the album) come crushing in.
And, at last, it's the last six songs that really describe (at least to me) what this album is all about. "Room 13" and "Damaged II" are high energy, dark behemoths of songs that only hit the tip of the iceberg that is the anger of Black Flag. And then "No More" follows with it's slow bass intro that is eventually joined by the drums, building up to this speedy powerhouse followed closely by the fast "Padded Cell".
And, at last, we reach the end which, as I said before, the entire album builds up to: "Life of Pain" and "Damaged I". "Life of Pain" introduces itself with a dissonant guitar and drum build-up, leading into pure, bitter, ferociousness. And this song finally leads into the utterly chaotic and harsh pandemonium that is "Damaged I". I don't think I have ever heard a song so anger ridden than this one. There seems to be almost no rhyme or reason to this piece, but it is so utterly perfect and finishes exactly what this album has been building up to.
There is no album, in my opinion, more perfect than this one and it is more than worth the purchase. And if you find yourself not really liking it right away, give it a few listens and it WILL grow on you. |
