First punk rock album I ever heard... Submitted on: 2009-10-22 |

This is my favorite all-time punk ruck album. I know there are "better" ones out there (in terms of quality, variation of songs, etc.) but I am slightly biased. Growing up in middle-class suburbia, I had never heard anything like this before. Some guy gave me "Everything Went Black" on double vinyl and the first time I put it on... Well, I remember everything about that night. Slightly intoxicated, I laid back on the floor of my room and as this record played, my whole world turned upside down.
It's been many years now since I first heard this record, and I still have it in my collection of course. Lots of people say Black Flag was a no-talent band, with constantly rotating members and poor production quality. Who f*ing cares? They were one of the first bands to strip all the bull away from punk rock music, writing and recording perfectly concise and direct songs. Everything I felt through high school but couldn't articulate was contained in the songs of this album. And even now as an adult I still get that feeling I used to get when I hear these songs. Some mix of excitement and anger and contentment and nostalgia.
I am one of those Black Flag fans who hates Henry Rollins, so I would highly recommend this album. Dez, Chavo, and Greg were much better with their relatively short stints in Black Flag. Best album ever... |

Not bad! Submitted on: 2008-06-26 |

I am not really into demos, outtakes, second takes, remixes and ect. I find them to be damaging to the song, as I currently know it.
The CD is nothing but some demos, with other (and lesser liked) Black Flag singers. And I think this is really interesting. I have really enjoyed this experience. It is a another look into some classic Black Flag tunes.
I really hate demos. Yuck! But to hear songs off "Damage" be sung by Keith, Roy and Dez, is really entertaining. For example, there is a version of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and "Depression" done by everybody but Rollins.
Please note, Rollins is not featured on this compilation! But I think that might even be the whole point!
This release, is a MOST have to for all Black Flag fans. Who was the best Black Flag singer?? Who cares! They all bought something different to the table.

best flag you can get Submitted on: 2007-07-11 |

| First off, Keith Morris has always been my favorite Black Flag vocalist. This record is perfect then since it has 9 songs with him singing including Dont Care which he recycled(along with wasted) on the first Circle Jerks album and which was rewritten by Chuck Dukowski as You Bet We've Got Something Personal Against You on the Jealous Again ep in response to the Circle Jerks "misusing Black Flag songs". It's also great to hear the songs from Damaged sung by these three singers and I consider almost every version of those songs to be superior to the versions off that album. That is of course not to say I don't like Henry Rollins era Black Flag. My War is a masterpeice and a personal favorite of mine, but in my opinion Henry's vocals work better with the more metal style that Flag adopted rather than their original hardcore sound. Now I would like to address all the comments about Rollins ruining the band. These comments have little basis in reality considering that Greg Ginn had all the power in the band. The change in musical direction had more to do with him getting bored playing three chords over and over in every song and wanting to experiment more than anything. Besides, people too narrow minded to accept a band's desire to play something that sounds different from what they've been doing for half a decade shouldn't be listening to creative music in the first place. |

More 1978-1981 BLACK FLAG? Who could ask for more? More greatness. Submitted on: 2006-03-27 |

Keith Morris, Chavo, Dez. What? Henry missing? Ah man, guess I'll have to live without him, not that he ruined BLACK FLAG, just, well, after Damaged LP everything they did was worthless so, who knows, maybe he did. What I do know it that if yer into BLACK FLAG you gotta own this album. Anytime you get to hear more from their finest period, heck, their only great period, you should go there. And, please, don't waste your time buying anything they ever released after Damaged.
Meanwhile, we get the same basic songs from this period but done by the 3 different great vocalists. Which means different takes and years. Resulting in shadings of differences. And, most importantly, a set of songs with Keith Morris singing not otherwise available. Let's face it, him singing for BLACK FLAG is about the best possible punk rock combination possible. I saw him with half of the CIRCLE JERKS and half of the WEIRDOS 12-01 live for the benefit for Flipside magazine at the El Rey in Hollywood do 3 of these early BLACK FLAG songs and it took me to punk rock heaven. Instantly.
Plus, there's the bonus. On the 2xLP the 4th side was radio commercials for BLACK FLAG gigs and such. I know that may sound odd, given that there's rarely any commercials for any real punk rock over the decades but I think it probably made sense given they had KROQ and a bunch of punx listening in Southern California at the time. The good news is, we get a chance to hear those commercials here and it may not be something you listen to repeatedly but they're sure worth hearing at least once. They're sorta the equivilent of the great art works that were punk rock flyers back in the day. Much of the time we'll look at the flyer these days and just wish we'd been at that show. Every once in a while, if yer old enough and could get outta the house, you might see one you actually went to. Lovely.
Get it kids. You old punx, if you don't have it, get it. It's not like there's a bunch of amazing punk rock to scoop up these days. Get what's great. This is. chrisbct@hotmail.com |
