THE BEST LITTLE BAND IN TEXAS Submitted on: 2001-12-12 |
|
| I PURCHASE ALMOST EVERY CD THAT IS PROMOTED AS OFFERING ANY TEXAS WESTERN SWING HONKY-TONK DANCE HALL TUNES. MOST ARE A DISAPPOINTMENT, USUALLY BECAUSE THEY OFFER LITTLE, IF ANY, ORIGINAL MATERIAL AND/OR THEIR RENDITION OF OLD STANDARDS LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED. NOT TRUE FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS IN THE CORNELL HURD BAND!! CORNELLS HONKY-TONK DANCE HALL LYRICS ARE MOST OF THE BEST BEING WRITTEN IN THIS GENRE TODAY, AND HIS HARD-DRIVING BAND, OF REALLY GOOD PICKERS, IS THE PERFECT MATCH FOR HIS OFTEN HEARTBREAKING SONGS PERFORMED WITH A BIT OF HUMOUR SET TO A SOLID DANCE HALL BEAT (MUCH LIKE A LOT OF OLD WILLS TUNES) I TELL YOU, YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THE SMOKE AND SMELL THE BEER WHEN THIS TIGHT GROUP SHOWERS DOWN ON ONE OF THEIR ALMOST JAZZY ARRANGEMENTS. EVEN THEIR STUDIO CUTS PROJECT A LIVE FEELING. MOSTLY, I THINK, BECAUSE CORNELL SHARES THE STAGE BY INTRODUCING ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND. AFTER YOU HAVE THREE OR FOUR OF THEIR CD'S, YOU DEVELOP AN AFFECTION FOR THIS BAND THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE WITH ANOMYMOUS STUDIO MUSICIANS. IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE HURD GROUP, THEY OFFER MUCH MORE THAN CORNELLS ORIGINAL TUNES. IN FACT, THEY WERE ECLECTIC BEFORE WE KNEW THE WORD. THEY PLAY EVERYTHING FROM STANDARDS TO BOOGIE WOOGIE TO ALMOST CLASSICAL, GIVING EVERY MEMBER AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO THEIR THING. I MUST MENTION THEIR GUEST STARS THAT RANGE FROM LEGEND JOHNNY BUSH TO NEW TEXAS STAR JUSTIN TREVINO. SOME OF THEM HAVENT BROKEN OUT YET, BUT THE POTENTIAL IS THERE FOR ALL OF THEM....GIVE THEM A LISTEN.. THX |

Great band/Great CD Submitted on: 1999-03-10 |
|
| On a whim, I left southeast Missouri for the Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas on 3/4/99. On 3/5/99, Friday night, at The Broken Spoke, I had the good fortune of catching The Cornell Hurd Band. These guys were great! I was blown away. I couldn't really call myself a Texas swing fan until I heard these guys rock the house. So knocked out by their performance, I had to buy the Texas Fruit Shack CD & Cornell was gracious enough to sign my copy. Like their live performance, it's a great CD!Take it from this crusty old songwriting/musician of 20 years, these guys are the real deal. If you'd like to expand your horizons & really get into the soul of Texas Honky-Tonk, get this CD. You won't be disappointed. The Cornell Hurd Band is proof that even the most traditional forms of hardcore Texas Swing/Honkey-Tonk is alive & well & ever evolving. |

| the Cornell Hurd band has a great Texas sound. This is a keeper. Great Two-Steppin Sound. Johnny Bush is still alive, he sounds as good as he ever has. |
