Absolute masterpiece. Submitted on: 2009-10-24 |

Words can't describe how good this album is it has to be heard to be believed. It is one of the strangest albums i have ever heard but after a few listens it really gets under your skin.
I got the Japanese imported SHM-CD version which is quite expensive but if you are a lover of this album it is well worth the extra money. The sound quality blows the original cd away (sounds like it was remastered to me) and it also contains the 10:43 original 12" version of Flashlight as a bonus track. The packaging is also very good. |

Anotha Chapter In The Mothership Saga & Definitely A Funk Masterpiece!! Submitted on: 2009-08-03 |

I remember buying this classic album, along with E,W&F's classic
"All-n-All" (with my allowance--age 13) on the same day back in November of 1977.
Both had awesome album covers, and I was a huge fan of both acts, who were among
the creme de la creme of black music at the time!
I decided to open this one, "Funkentelechy V.S. The Placebo Syndrome"
first, and as I looked through the comic booklet (brilliantly illustated by Overton Loyd),
the sounds of "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)" poured from the family sound system
and I was transported into P-Funk's parallel universe (ruled by the one!),
where an epic battle was at hand to save mankind from the UNFUNKY UFO's &
the dreaded PLACEBO SYNDROME!! (-:
On the side of the funk (the good side) was none other than Starchild!!
--Protector of the Pleasure Principle!! (9 yrs before Janet Jackson's song!).
On the side of the unfunky, square & tight butted adversary...hailing from the
Zone Of Zero Funkativity, was the infamous Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk!!
(His first introduction in the Mothership Connection saga!)
He refused to dance, rejected the holy doctrine issued by the honorable
Dr. Funkenstein to go forth into the universe and funk!!
His mission as the Subliminal Seducer, was to cast the world into a cold,
dead, stiff and funkless state of being forever!! (LOL!!)
George Clinton had a way of taking the absurd and giving it meaning!--That was his genius!
Glenn Goins' powerful and haunting tenor voice & guitar work made it's last
appearance within the funk mob's mythology on "Bop Gun", and during the recording
sessions for this album. He would leave with several other members because of
money disputes with G.C. and form his own band called "Quazzar" with Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey
and his brother Kevin Goins. Sadly, Glenn would never live to see that project
come to fruition...he died about 8 months after this album was released in July of 1978.
He did however, live to see this album climb the R&B charts to platinum status!
To me, this whole album, like "Mothership Connection" before it and "Motor Booty Affair"
after it, were complete funk masterpieces!
Everything on this album was the bomb!
"Bop Gun", "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk", "Wizard Of Finance", "Funkentelechy",
"Placebo Syndrome", and last but definitely not least..."FLASHLIGHT!!",
which was Parliament's first number 1 single!
("Tear The Roof Of The Sucker" had only made it to Number 5!)
All of Parliament / Funkadelic's 1974-1980 output has been studied, sampled,
and downright stolen by hip-hoppers and musicians in every genre of music over
the last 35 yrs since these albums were released!
This album is testimony to the ingeniusness of George Clinton's kaleidoscopic
visonary mind, the brilliant musicianship of Boosty Collins, Bernie Worrell,
Garry Shider, Glenn Goins, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Catfish Collins,
and a whole army of other players and singers that made the
"Parliafunkadelicment Thang" so damn funky and legends for all time!
I love it when new generations of music lovers discover P-Funk
for the first time!--They are so blown away by their originality
as well as many house rockin' grooves!
They just can't get enough!--Much like me as a young teenager all those
years ago when all of it was new, fresh, and so far ahead of the pack!!
The fact that VH-1's "Classic Albums" series has never done episodes
on "Funkentelechy" nor "Mothership Connection" simply amazes me to this day!
Let's all protest & sign an e-petition!! Then send it to [...] and demand
that they produce episodes on both of those albums for the 2010 season!

A Classic Submitted on: 2008-12-03 |

| Bookended with "Mothership Connection", this is the essential Parliament album (a special nod to "Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein", which is just a notch below these two) and it further elaborates on the basic themes introduced on "Mothership", albeit with a much more forceful political and social bite carefully packaged as irresistable groove music. Of course, this album contains the groups biggest hit ("Flashlight")but there is much more to the album than just that one shining (corny pun intended, I apologize) moment. "Funkentelechy" is a verbal assault on commercialism at the expense of integrity, wrapped in humorous vocalizations, satirical lyrics and a murderously insistent groove colored by all sorts of odd Bernie Worrell piano flourishes. Of course, there is "Bop Gun" which contains one of the most astonishing vocal performances ever captured on record (by the late, staggeringly great Glenn Goins) and the "Placebo Syndrome", the anti-disco ballad... not to mention the showcase of "Sir Nose", the cartoonish character embodying unfunkiness. One often overlooked track is "Wizard Of Finance" which showcases P-funk's sure hand with a sweet soulful ballad, and features a nice, lyrical Tenor Sax solo by Maceo Parker. Anyway, you can't go wrong here... This is essential to any understanding of Parliament-Funkadelic, it is a classic in content, performance and listenability. Rarely does such a message-laden concept coalesce with such grin-inducing musicality. |

we got to get over the hump... Submitted on: 2008-11-12 |

'Funkentelechy...' is the ultimate Parliament no doubt. George and the Mob placed their collective feet off in it...toe-jam and all. It is so tight, so funky, so 'on the ONE'...Sir Nose never stood a chance. This Funk bomb is so round, so firm, so...fully-packed!!! juicy
1977, my junior year in college, studying was hard enough, and here comes THIS! It's a wonder I graduated at all. As an official member of Uncle Jam's army, I contend that after 31 years, I'm still lost...Have you ever seen such a sight in your life?!?
The grooves on this cut are so deep, so layered, so syncopated, so funky...Wizard of Finance and Placebo Syndrome, are all that save you from losing your mind completely...and they're Funky as all get out. If you don't have your resistance built up, you can lose your mind in this cd...SERIOUSLY!
Funkentelechy is arguably the single deepest cut by Parliament. Heavy weight Funk, mind your wants, 'cause someone wants your mind. The horns are off the hook, the guitar, the bass, the background vocals, keys, drums...damn, it all fits so incredibly well. They truly freed the possibilities for funk BEYOND compare...Flash Light? As great as it is, on this set...it's over-rated, but that walking bass is 'the MOST'.

| It doesn't get any better than this for George Clinton. An absolute "must-have" album. Sir Nose demonstrates the great creativity of Clinton, while Flashlight has the ultimate bassline. |
