Greatest Hits
Submitted on: 2009-11-08
Greatest Hits being a compilation album with the Bangles and contains such classic tracks such as "Manic Monday","If she knew what she wants", "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "Eternal Flame". The booklet contains no lyrics but we get well written liner notes written by Mark Rowland. Allmusic and Robert Christgau gave this album high marks in their reviews and I agree. 4/5.
Missed hearing the Bangles

I heard a Bangles song in a store while shopping. Thought about how much I used to like that particular song. Went everywhere to try to buy a C.D. It's like they have disappeared from the face of the earth. You can buy all the Elvis C.D.'s you want but no Bangles. Couldn't find anything. Went to Amazon.com. Found exactly what I wanted in a few minutes (Bangles Greatest Hits) at a great price. Have been listening to it on my way to work every morning. Great songs.

Great Songs

Greatest Hits is 48 minutes and 25 seconds and was released on May 8, 1990. Greatest Hits reached #97 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Charts and has since gone Platinum. This was the group first compilation album. Granted only eight songs from the CD charted and then again that is the total number songs the group has had on the U.S. charts. They did much better in the United Kingdom. Still there are songs included for the die hard Bangles fan. I am giving Greatest Hits an AAAA++++.

some really great tunes from The Bangles
Submitted on: 2009-04-15
Greatest Hits by The Bangles takes me back primarily to the 1980s when this group took the airwaves by storm. We danced to these songs in clubs and The Bangles sold quite a few records and LP singles in their time, too. These ladies can really belt out a tune with strong musical arrangements that leave you wanting more; and the songs on this album prove it. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is nicely done.

The CD starts with these ladies performing "Hero Takes A Fall." "Hero Takes A Fall" is true `80s pop and dance music combined; The Bangles bat this straight out of the ballpark and I'm very impressed. The guitar work is also excellent on this opening number. "Going Down To Liverpool" has a good beat to it and The Bangles perform this very well; but for a true Bangles hit listen for the next number, "Manic Monday." "Manic Monday" was--and still is--a song so many people could identify with--it's all THAT good. The Bangles sing and play this one with all their might and with just one listen you can tell why it was such a big hit for them. It got lots of airtime and sometimes I still hear on an "oldies" radio station in my local area. "Manic Monday" is definitely a major highlight of this CD.

"Walk Like An Egyptian" also hit the airwaves and the clubs very big; The Bangles got a lot of mileage out of this tune. "Walk Like An Egyptian" had a music video to go along with it but I remember focusing on this great song and it still sounds just right for dancing today! The percussion works wonders for "Walk Like An Egyptian," too. In addition, "Walking Down Your Street" has a very strong vibe; it's very well written and The Bangles do this one up right. There's also the tune by Simon & Garfunkel entitled "Hazy Shade Of Winter;" "Hazy Shade Of Winter" has a fine beat that still make me tap my feet to the beat of this number today. "Hazy Shade Of Winter" wasn't exactly their very biggest hit but it has quite a strong feel to it anyway.

"In Your Room" has that `80s pop sound with a few psychedelic vibes; and the next track entitled "Eternal Flame (La Flama Enterna)" was always very beautiful in my mind. I think "Eternal Flame (La Flama Enterna)" is a tune you either like or dislike because it is somewhat unlike the majority of the work The Bangles did together. I like it because it just plain sounds pretty. "I'll Set You Free" is an awesome number that uses the guitars very well in the musical arrangement; The Bangles perform this with all their hearts and souls and it comes off smelling like a rose. The CD also ends very strong with The Bangles performing the memorable "Where Were You When I Needed You." "Where Were You When I Needed You" is quite a number and it leaves me wanting more.

The Bangles still tour but I don't get the idea that they make quite as much new music as they once did. Believe me, even if they stopped altogether they could never be forgotten by people like me who danced to their tunes every Saturday night in the clubs and at the parties our friends gave. I highly recommend this for fans of The Bangles; and this is also a strong introductory album for people just discovering the talents of The Bangles.
