Xscape, in my book is one of the most underrated r&b groups of their era. I think that they were definitely celebrated by the r&b audience but they were never able to cross over like EnVogue or TLC which is a shame because their vocal ability alone far outclassed a lot of other groups who were their contemporaries in the early to late '90s.
On this album, each lady sang a good portion of lead vocals which displayed all of their singing abilities in addition to continuing to showcase their excellent ability to harmonize. Back when I bought it, I enjoyed the mid-tempo construction of the album and because each song is so unique lyrically, I never felt nor feel bored today while listening to the songs.
My standout tracks are:
DO YOUR THANG - with an assist from the incomparable, Isaac Hayes
FEELS SO GOOD - Kandi takes the lead on this low-key but head nod inducing track
HARD TO SAY GOODBYE - notable for the fact that they trade lead vocals
WHO CAN I RUN TO - excellent remake
DO YOU WANT TO - really pretty ballad on which again each lady sings a lead verse
WHAT CAN I DO - enjoyable more uptempo track
WORK ME SLOW - steamy ballad
Overall while this album wasn't as diverse in terms of tempo as their debut, I respect the fact that the album has a theme and stuck to it. I also think that this album better showcases Kandi & Tiny's vocals by allowing all four of the ladies to sing lead verses on a few tracks. This is a good follow-up to their debut that successfully avoided any kind of "sophomore slump" and sounds timeless enough so that you can't really pinpoint it as a '90s album. |

Off the Hook indeed! Submitted on: 2008-10-09 |

| "Off the Hook," Xscape's second CD was their overall best. From the singles like "Feel So Good," "Can't Hang," "Do You Want To," and the #1 R&B smash, "Who Can I Run To," to the album tracks like, "Hard to Say Goodbye," "Work Me Slow," and "Keep It On the Real," this was one of those CDs you can put in and just press play. A must have! |
