Not sure if they got what they were going for here. Submitted on: 2009-10-21 |

A good disc but wears a little thin as it goes on. I guess this is their concept album and sometimes artist feel it's their need or duty to write songs about the current societal and political state, but about ˝ ways through the point is well made and doesn't need to be driven home anymore.
I can appreciate the content and would think that the lyrics, whole or in part, touch on things we've all dealt with. Perhaps these songs should have been spread over 2 records, combined with other compositions that could have presented a more hopeful view of mans demise and how it fits into reality, if that's possible.
Musically, although maybe not the strongest from the band, it's a good record and Natalie's voice sounds as good as ever. "You Happy Puppet" has some smooth rhythm guitar over a nice, easy beat and "Headstrong" could easily fit on an INXS album. "Jubilee" slams the door closed on this magical misery tour. Perhaps built in concept off of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", it's hard to imagine the song not pulling some emotions out of you since it deals with assumptions, prejudice, religion and hypocrisy. It's hard to get happy after this one.
On the other hand is "Our Time in Eden" which is very uplifting. "These Are days" is one of my favorite songs and even thought the subject may be tried they really do breath new life into it. If "Few And Far Between" was on American bandstand it would get a "has a good beat and is easy to dance to". "Tolerance" has a very strong arrangement, especially the vocals. This disc seems to have laid the ground work for Natalie's solo career as the songs can easily fit in with pieces such as "Kind & Generous", "Wonder" and "Carnival". |

Classic Maniacs Submitted on: 2009-01-21 |

| Stellar follow-up to first main stream release (In My Tribe). As with "Tribe" every track is unique, carrying it's own message through intelligent lyrics and diverse music. Big Parade, Eat For Two, Trouble Me, Headstrong, Dustbowl, Posion in the Well, Lion's Share & You Happy Puppet, are all worthy of praise. Even the other 3 tracks are worth listening to. It's actually hard for me to choose between Tribe and Blind Man's Zoo. Yes, Tribe is fantastic in it's own right, but Zoo definitely has that little bit of growth as a band, in both music and lyrics. |

10,000 Maniacs - Not Exactly Uplifting Music Submitted on: 2008-05-08 |

| Before Natalie Merchant became a solo artist she was the leader of 10,000 Maniacs a band that is still around today albeit with a different vocalist. This is the only Maniacs album that I own, but every time I pull it out I remember what a great little band this was. Merchant has a unique voice that is up front throughout this album, but what really make this special is her lyrics. Lyrically this is one of the best written albums in my entire collection. Often depressing and heavy handed Merchant's lyrical portraits of characters and situations are like a fine painting. Songs like "The Big Parade", "Jubilee", Hatful Hate" "Dust Bowl", and "Eat For Two" are all small masterpieces that come across like mini-short stories. The music on this album is all good with fine accomniemtn to Merchant's vox. This album seems to get very mixed reviews from fans of the band many sighting it as too depressing. To me, that is the album's strength. The hit single from the album was "Trouble Me" which is an upbeat number, but in my opinion the weakest track on the disc and not very representative of what the rest of the album is all about. This disc is a nice little gem from the late 80's and is well worth checking out. |

the most underrated album of the late 80s Submitted on: 2008-03-27 |

| this is one of my most favorite albums i wore out the vinyl version of this album when it first came out. This cd is lyricaly powerfull, provacative, and thought provoking i enjoy natalie merchants vocal delivery on each song because you can tell she really is putting her heart into what she is singing. the most disturbing song on this cd is jubilee with its strong racial and religious overtones which are the aparent in the lyrical mosaic. I love this cd and play it often because it causes you to think and this is thinking peoples music. |

The product is a hard to find CD by The 10,000 Maniacs. No record store in the area could locate it.
It arrived quickly, in good shape and excellent condition. A great CD that shows the early talent of the group. Worth the listen |
