Tigerlily is fifty-two minutes and six seconds long and was released on June 20, 1995. Tigerlily reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album and #32 U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts. This was Natalie Merchant first solo album after leaving 10,000 Maniacs. The music is comprised of mainstream, Adult Contemporary and soft rock sound. Since this is my first cassette that I own of Natalie Merchant, I can't go into further details and my opinion about her is still open. Still I am giving Tigerlily by Natalie Merchant a B+.

Even though I would give everything she did in her solo career 5 stars, Tigerlily really hits a home run. What can I say, her unique voice seems to put a spell on me every time I listen to her.
Keep up the good work, Natalie. |

Yet another treasure it took me forever to finally get my hands on Submitted on: 2009-01-18 |

I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there who have heard so much hype about an album, made every effort to get it, just was never able to, and eventually got it so many years down the road. If not, then I'm uniquely alone in the endeavor of obtaining Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlilly," released all those years ago in 1995, quite recently.
I remember the hype surrounding her departure from 10,000 Maniacs in the '90's (her announcement coming years before the fact) and the intense speculation of whether or not she would produce a quality solo album. Not only did she prove the critics wrong (again), but she created such an amazing album that the sound remains far from dated almost 15 years after its release and it's one of those rare treasures that I can listen to from beginning to end.
The album starts off with a great, mellow tune, "San Andreas Fault," which I can't get enough of. Also included are the radio-friendly "Wonder" and "Carnival" (which both received okay radio airplay - in my view, not as much as they should have considering the caliber of Merchant's talent).
Though I can listen to the album in its entirety, I will admit I prefer to skip over "Beloved Wife." While a beautiful song, it's extremely depressing and Merchant's increasingly sad tone as the song goes on doesn't help matters any. That sad feeling lingers a while after the song's ended. On a brighter note, "Seven Years" was a great finale to this classic album.
If there ever was an essential album, "Tigerlilly" is definitely it! - Donna Di Giacomo |
