 Durante could never go out of style...

As Time Goes By: The Best Of Jimmy Durante has a good number of songs by this gravelly voiced singer. Jimmy isn't really remembered for being a singer; but in actuality he could deliver a tune very well. He was able to use his voice to pour a lot of emotion into his songs, too. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is done in good taste.
The CD starts with Jimmy Durante singing that timeless love song "As Time Goes By" from the movie Casablanca. This song has been performed by many a singer; but I still love Jimmy's rendition of this love ballad. His timing is excellent and his flawless diction bolsters his performance. The strings could have been toned down a bit here and there; but this is a minor complaint as Jimmy really does this very well. Great! There's another gem in "Smile;" this Charlie Chaplin tune features Jimmy Durante squarely in the spotlight which is right where he always belonged! "Smile" is a remarkably poignant song with so much meaning to it; and none of this is wasted by Jimmy who sings this to perfection--and beyond! I'm impressed.
"Make Someone Happy" gets the royal treatment from the great Jimmy Durante; this is clearly a major highlight of this album and the backup vocalists harmonize to perfection--not that Jimmy needed it; but they do sound pretty good anyway. The strings are also used to great advantage on "Make Someone Happy;" and that's grand. "Young At Heart" has a lot of true advice in it; and Jimmy delivers this with the style of the champ he always was! "Young At Heart" is another major highlight of this CD and I'm sure you'll like it if you enjoy this type of classic pop vocal music.
"Hello, Young Lovers" is very well done and the lush musical arrangement makes the number very pretty and thoughtful at once. There's also a treat when Jimmy Durance sings "The Glory Of Love." "The Glory Of Love" gets the royal treatment from Durante the master; and just one listen proves it. "The Glory Of Love" charms me with its beauty and Jimmy does great justice to this ballad. "I'll Be Seeing You" is a knock-out number; this romantic, nostalgic tune could never be outdated. Jimmy tackles "I'll Be Seeing You" with all his might and you can tell he's practically giving blood to make this tune a stand-out. The album also ends very well with Jimmy Durante performing "I'll See You In My Dreams." "I'll See You In My Dreams" amazes me and it makes a strong ending for this album. It also left me wanting more!
Jimmy Durante may no longer be with us; but he clearly lives on through his wonderful recordings and his acting in movies. This is a great one for Jimmy Durante fans; and it also makes a great starter CD for people just discovering the artistry of Jimmy Durante. Of course, people who enjoy classic pop vocals may also want to get this album.

| There is purity of soul in the Schozzola's voice, which usually is absent from "better" voices. A grandfather's doting voice beats a Vegas crooner's voice any day. Miss ya, Jimmy. |

Jimmy Durante never professed to be a great singer, but the music he makes will put a smile on your lips and a tear in your eye. The supporting orchestration is on a par with that of the best vocalists. This CD has some of the best music to offer and if it was a vinyl record, mine probably would be worn out by now. And, as always, he concludes with his "Goodnight Mrs.Kalabash, - - - - - " If you love music from this era, you will not be disappointed with this CD.
