Roger Millers' Best Submitted on: 2009-07-02 |

"Big River" is, I think, one of the greatest things done by the late Roger Miller.
It is a masterpiece. I hope you also get to see it performed some day! I did and it was beautiful theatre.
John Goodman and Rene Auberjenois and all the other actors round out a superb cast.
Buy it. Enjoy it.

A good recording of a mediocre show Submitted on: 2009-04-06 |

Technically, this recording is excellent. Music cuts aren't sloppy. All the important songs are included in the recording, and the lyrics are very easy to understand, even in the large ensemble numbers.
The cover proudly boasts "Winner of 7 1985 Tony Awards, including Best Musical." While true, 1984-1985 was one of the weakest seasons ever for musicals on Broadway. (None of the other nominated shows that year ran more than 120 performances!) Basically, this is a weak show and weak score by modern standards. The score has a few catchy numbers ("The Royal Nonesuch," "Do You Wanna Go to Heaven?") and a gorgeous ballad ("Leavin's Not the Only Way to Go"), but most of the music is better suited for the radio than the Broadway stage (or the soundtrack aficionado's collection).
Basically, I feel torn about this CD. Roger Miller is an excellent song writer and the album reflects that. But there are no songs in the grand musical theatre tradition of reaching the heights of depths of human emotion. Nor are there songs that are clever, witty, or novel. Nor is any of the music complex or intricate. All that's here is track after track of OK songs...
If you're a Roger Miller fan or like the show, then buy the CD. You won't be disappointed. But if you're looking for another gem to add to your soundtrack collection, then spend your money on something else. |

"Big River" Is Awesome Submitted on: 2009-01-12 |

| I heartily recommend "Big River" to anyone who loves music, especially fans of Mark Twain's novel. The score is uplifting and "catchy." Teachers especially will be able to incorporate the music into their lesson plans. Many of the songs help reinforce the concepts present in the novel. Purchase this CD! You won't be disappointed. |

Who would have thought? Submitted on: 2008-10-19 |

Roger Miller wrote and performed mostly light-hearted, sometimes goofy, but clever, country songs. Then, after he had left the stage for almost a generation, he penned this classic musical.
When I first saw it performed in a regional theater, I had to be convinced that it was the same Roger Miller.
Who would have thought he had so wide a range in musical styles, such with virtuosity in all of them?
The songs range from sensitive to hilarious, giving as wide a range of emotion as one could expect from a musical. This is a musical for everybody -- even those who dismiss the musical-theater genre as too frivolous for their masculinity! |
