| Somewhere I read once that it was thought that this was Steve Miller's bid to create "the ultimate playable album". Not that there hadn't been any concept of that in his music before but on this one that was the primary thing he was going for. Following up The Joker was probably a pretty difficult task and the end result was a session of recording so strong it actually yielded enough high quality material for at least two albums, the other of which was released a year later as Book of Dreams. In terms of the musical flavors Stevie Miller borrowed here from every single one of his many influences from blues, jazz, country and plain old rock n roll:not to mention the newest weapon in his musical arsenel-funk. The result is an album that blends all of this into this flowing pop mixture. The title track, which we probably all know from all it's radio play.......if your listening to it from my point of view actually reveals itself as an electronic tinged funk workout. Funny how,if the time and place demand it such a tune could end up being revered as classic rock. "Wild Mountain Honey",while likely forgotton is one of the strongest songs on the album-an atmospheric space soul piece that again makes excellent use of synthesizer. "Serenade" extends the theme with an Isley Brothers-ish rock n soul number that works well in Miller's general musical viewpount."Dance Dance Dance" is the very old timey bluesy country number. You could almost call "Take The Money And Run" as something of a musical follow up to the title song from the previous album and not too surprisingly ended up becoming one of this albums big smashes. "Rock N Me" is more what could be described as classic rock although,as if everything here there is less relience on noise making than there is created rhythm of some sort."Mercury Blues","Sweet Marie" and "The Window" reveal the bluesier side of this album and the allter two to close things down on. Within all this diversity the songs are linked musically in a way by a wind like sound effect. Without any doubt Steve Miller's commitment to his sound and craft shines through even as he was reaching for the top of the charts too. And this being 1976 and along with the..well what SHOULD be obvious funk and soul elements that says a lot about the sense of pop creativity at the time. |

Fly Like an Eagle Submitted on: 2008-02-18 |

ESSENTIAL ALBUM!!! Steve Miller hit a commercial milestone with this album. Not even The Joker hinted at what was around the corner for this artist. It has always been hard for me to choose between this album & Book of Dreams. They are very similar & there's a good reason for it; both were recorded at the same time. Capitol Records decided wisely to issue them separately a year apart. Best songs on the album include "Fly Like an Eagle", "Mercury Blues" & "Rockin' Me Baby".
It's a shame that Steve Miller took so long to release new material after these two albums. With the amount of time it took him he should've had some good material but, alas, no. Steve Miller is a competent journeyman guitarist, his main strength being his ability to recycle riffs & songs making them his own.
Steve Miller has not enjoyed the commercial success since Fly Like an Eagle & Book of Dreams. The reason is simple: He could not duplicate what he did on these two albums. |

The Tragic Cost of Selling Out Submitted on: 2007-09-29 |

Once upon a time, Steve Miller was a musical force - though at the time, he got little airplay. From "Children of the Future" through "Number 5", the Steve Miller Band made great music.
The came a troubled period, followed by "The Joker". With this album, he set his sights on breaking the Top 40, and while he succeeded, it was hardly admirable work (not an uncommon tale among those who trade respect for profit).
"Fly Like An Eagle" continues that pattern of pandering to the lowest common denominator - a pattern he seems determined to maintain.
If you'd like to know what the man is actually capable of, I recommend "Sailor", "Brave New World", or "Your Saving Grace" (sadly, out-of-print). |
