5.0 out of 5 stars Funk Masterpiece Re-Discovered, January 17, 2012
This review is from: Bread Alone (Audio CD)
Junie's 1980 "BREAD ALONE" album is so rare it borderlines on the obscure. This release never made any impact on any of the American Billboard Charts and never spun off any hits. However, for the knowledgeable CD collector who loves late 70's/early 80's funk R&B this release is a true treasure. Junie was a one time member of the OHIO PLAYERS and is a talented musician, songwriter and producer.

Every track here is interesting and in many ways ahead of it's time. LOVE HAS TAKEN ME OVER(BE MY BABY), BREAD ALONE, SEAMAN FIRST CLASS(JOCK ROCK) and APPLE SONG are a cross between mid-tempo rockers and classy funk. FUNKY PARTS and WHY are more hard hitting funkers. Any of these songs could have been hits had they been promoted proeprly back in 1980.

For some reason this album was completely lost and forgotten and has not been available in any format for years. Now thanks to BBR, "BREAD ALONE" gets the proper re-master that it deserves. The sound quality is, as with every BBR release, amazing. The liner notes are informative and interesting. The original album artwork, front and back, is in tact.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Find, March 14, 2010
This review is from: Bread Alone (Audio CD)
Post P-Funk Junie. I bought the lp when it was first released nearly 30 years ago. I never thought back then that the music I loved would be consider an "oldie" but time is the great educator. If you are hip to Junie then you already know the deal with this one and if you are not hip to him this may not be the best place to start. I would jump ahead to this next release "Junie 5" and then double back to this and then to Parliament's "Motor Booty Affair" and Funkadelic's "One Nation Under A Groove". His input on the latter CDs is deep in the DNA of the sound. Go Forth and Funk.

5.0 out of 5 stars "...Bemybabybemybabe...."(Notes on A Son of the Funk), June 23, 2004
This review is from: Bread Alone (Audio CD)
...a treasure from the lost funk vaults is Love Has Taken Me Over with it's infectuous 'be my' hooks...

The All Music Guide lists some 5 W. Junie Morrison solo albums. Three were under the Westbound Records fold--When We Do (with the Ohio Players famous bald model on the cover...I actually heard/had that one.), Freeze and Suzie Super Groupie. There's even a Holy Grail like Best of..Junie Westbound Years CD. And there's even the rarer Bernie Worrell All the Woo In The World in which Junie's vocals were prominent on the tune I'll Be With You. Westbound already has most of the Ohio Players/Westbound records featuring Junie out on CD, albeit many are rare imports.

What's so special about Bread Alone, besides it's rarity? It's multi-tracked, multi-intrumental, self instrumental like moog and yamaha crazed 70s-80s Stevie Wonder and it came right near the dawn of m-t, m-i, s-i Prince. Junie was right from a whirlwind year or two with the P-Funk Mob (in fact, he borrows P-Funk vocalist Lynn Maybry for backgrounds) and an unfortunate accident made problems with touring so much. He recorded these tracks in Cincinattay Ohio....All the tracks are good and steamin' hot synth funk. He even riffs his contributing vibe from Not Just Knee Deep at the beginning of Love has Taken Me Over...Love has Taken, Why, Bread Alone, and Seaman First Class are why some sellers are getting prime dollar for this one. I would not pay that much but overall, if you purchase it at some of the inflated prices, I daresay you will be getting your money's worth and then some.

before we heard of some artist name prince there was junie who could play anything by himself, junie started with rthe ohio players on their early classics like funky worm, player's ballin, singin in the mornin-then going solo, then joining the p-funk mob junie created knee deep the funkadelic classic, and contributed plenty to the classic funk cd's motor booty affair, and one nation under a groove, well when p-funk went broke some members went elsewhere but junie made 3 cd's in the 80's unhfortunately this is the only one we can enjoy all funk lovers can appreciate this support your funk cause that's all we have left to carry us our funk.

4.0 out of 5 stars "bread alone", a must have for serious funk fan's!., October 30, 1998

"bread alone", the lone solo album still in print for one of "funk music's" most underrated stars!. "junie" cut his teeth in the early seventies with the ohio players and later with george clinton's parliament/funkadelic,JUNIE was one of the most promising artists to come-out of the detroit music scene. with a flair for doing almost everything in the studio, "junie" was one of those talent's that had such great originality and that style has shown on this album entitled "bread alone". from the opening line to; "love has taken me over" to the title track "bread alone", junie does his best to re-affirm his loyal legion of funk fan's that he's serious about his music and it shows on this tour de force!. this is a must buy for all fan's of both, "the ohio players" and "p-funk" "LONG LIVE JUNIE!",
