Just Enough Turtle Goodness

With 20 selections of Primo Turtle Greatness, this CD tells the tale without some of the lesser quality material that filled the bands LP's.

With the hits: "Happy Together", "Elenore", "You Showed Me", "You Baby" & "She'd Rather Be With Me", you have all the Groups big chart singles right here in one nice package. Other great Turtle tunes fit in well here: "Grim Reaper Of Love", "Outside Chance" {penned by Warren Zevon} and "You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain".

The Turtles were one of the better American groups to come out of the 1960's. This is the collection of their best songs of Pop Rockish Folk.
The vocal work of these guys {later to evolve into: "Flo & Eddie"} is very excellent. This CD is as great as it's title suggests.
Four Stars !!!
All Depends On Your Interpretation Of "Hit"
Submitted on: 2007-09-01
One reviewer questions labeling some of the songs in this compilation as "hits." Well, when you consider that, for every song that made it into the Billboard Pop Top/Hot 100 in any given year, there were many many more that did not. So, given that anything that made the Top/Hot 100 was indeed a "hit" then The Turtles chalked up 17 from mid-1965 to mid-1970. And you get ALL of them in this one package. Even "Eve Of Destruction" which, originally on their 1965 debut LP It Ain't Me Babe, just made it at # 100 as a single in June 1970 - their last charted hit incidentally.

Not too many "greatest hits" packages can make that claim and, solely from the point of view of a completist collector, that makes this a 5-star offering. Rhino is to be congratulated.

Starting out as The Nightriders and then The Crossfires, they became known primarily as "folk-rock artists" because of their treatment of It Ain't Me Babe - penned by Dylan. They were, instead, sort of a souped-up Lovin' Spoonful in suits, very funny in their stage act, and whose records boasted big-band arrangements and a Spector-like Wall of Sound. A couple of nice photos are included in the insert along with three pages of informative liner notes by Harold Bronson.

If there's a complaint - and it's a minor one - it's the exclusion of ANY of the B-sides. It would have been nice to have the flips of their top three hits [Like The Seasons which backed their only # 1 - Happy Together; The Walking Song which accompanied the # 3 She'd Rather Be With Me; and Surfer Dan which backed the # 6 Elenore, or Buzz Saw which was the flip of the other # 6 You Showed Me.

Instead we get Outside Chance [a failed single], Me About You [from an LP], and Guide For The Married Man [from the film of the same name].

The group underwent many personnel changes over the years, and in 1970, when they disbanded, members Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan joined Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention. In 1972 they re-emerged as Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, and some time later as Flo & Eddie. In 1985 they toured again as The Turtles. One of the drummers, Don Ray Murray, passed away at age 50 in March 1996.
Great 60's pop rock! Most people will really like this collection!

The Turtles were one of many sunshine pop/pop rock bands from the 60's, and like many they do not disappoint. "20 Greatest Hits" has all your favorite Turtles hits ("It Ain't Me Babe", "Happy Together", etc...) as well as some very good ones that you probably haven't heard before. What's great about these hits is that they were genuinely great songs - they are indeed (arguably lesser) timeless classics. The singers are pretty universally appealing - I'm pretty sure most people will like them. Musically it's pretty standard 60's pop rock, but it's all so well done that you won't mind. They are indeed great musicians and pretty good songwriters, too - every song is memorable and the lyrics are usually pretty well-worth your time to carefully pay attention to. The only complaint one could give about this collection is the audio quality which could certainly use a good remastering. Most people will love this collection, although some *may* not like the audio quality. All in all this is highly recommended!
