Powerful , Patriotic , American Submitted on: 2008-11-24 |

| This is a collection of upbeat patriotic song preformed in a very fast tempo. Shaw is one of the early conductor's in the sixties to try to recreate music in the way he belived to have been performed in its time. This performance is very American in that it is boisterous , proud upbeat This record will stir your heart to a faster rate. You can't hardly go wrong with any thing by the Robert Shaw Chorale . |

I was glad to see the latest review by James Yelvington. He's exactly right and I will add only this: when you're ready for an emotional reminder about the heart of "America", play this CD. No matter how "dated" or "orchestral" it might be, I promise you have never heard "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" as it is played and sung here. The same with the National Anthem.
These are not just Sousa marches. Look at the titles included. They are of the soul of this country. And The Robert Shaw Chorale treats them as such. |

American National Music As It Should Be Heard! Submitted on: 2006-06-28 |

Before adding my two cents, I read each of the several reviews already present. The one which comes closest, in my opinion, is that of Mr. Buursma, who notes the outstanding musical quality of this disk. Those who found it old-fashioned or not exciting enough we suspect would say the same about Beethoven's 9th or Mozart's Requiem. Flashy, it isn't; musically excellent it is!
I don't know what the reviewers mentioning the Mormon Tabernacle Choir had in mind. There is really no comparison between Shaw's singers and the massive, but less expressive, forces of that choir.
The late Robert Shaw was an unmatched phenomenon in choral music. He possessed an unfailing instinct and an impeccable taste in his musical leadership. And he carefully built up a group of singers to carry out his musical vision. We are more indebted to him than many apparently realize. No matter; time will bear out his musical worth, and he will still be appreciated by generations yet unborn.
The dangers in "patriotic" music are flashiness, over-emphasis on martial qualities, and generally "sound and fury signifying nothing." Those characteristics are totally alien to Shaw's musical nature, though he does, of course, realize the need to communicate the musical message effectively.
As to him who felt a Sousa approach would be more fitting, I ask what he thinks the song America The Beautiful is about. It is far more a poem or even a hymn than a battle song. Even the Battle Hymn of the Republic is as much hymn as battle cry.
I hope this CD is never allowed to go out of print. I doubt if it will ever be superseded, despite its 1962 sound. It is, quite simply, the best version you will find of most, if not all, the songs included here.

Patriotic Songs As They Should be Performed! Submitted on: 2005-11-02 |

| I am a devotee of this genre and The Robert Shaw Chorale does each song justice. This album (note my age, it is a CD!) makes my chest swell with pride. Being a Civil War buff, I found the many songs of that conflict to be an added treat. If you appreciate this type of music you should certainly buy this record. (old guy again...CD!) |
