Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

the best "first" album out there!
Submitted on: 2008-10-12
Though this is not their first album, it is considered their "1" album. The Album before it is considered their "0" album. Moving on, this album is one of my favorites and if it involves Saviour Machine, they all will have "my favorite" next to it. They are a rare band that crops up once every 1,000 years, and if you have had the privileged of listening to Saviour Machine, consider yourself blessed, because there are many people who consider Britney Spears to be "the best" and how unenlightened they are.

Eric Clayton is not ashamed to write in such away where he actually makes you think about what he is singing about, which is why Saviour Machine stands out from the rest. While others seem to want you mindless, Saviour Machine dares to make you think.

I found the band on an mixture album of many bands and the two songs I heard blew me away and I took a chance and brought all their albums at once and it was the best money I have ever spent. There is hardly a time when I do not listen to them, I can listen to them over and over again and it seems like i just heard that album for the first time.

This album sets the pace for their future albums, it shows how diverse they are in music, they vary the music between songs, one song will be "heavy" and another will be "classical" or they will mix the two.

If you want to start with them, pick up this album first and then go to Saviour Machine II.
AS WE ASCERTAIN THE ESSENCE ABOUT SPIRITUAL TECHNOLOGY

During my review of another group (in which I choose not to mention at this present time), my attention [by another reviewer (Thank You!)] was directed toward Savior Machine. What finally influenced my decision to give Savior Machine a try? It's something that's even much more simple than this sentence. Turn your attention toward the cover art above. It's amazing how with our human eyes, and understanding we try to gaze into God (i.e., perfection). The universe is nothing more than a grand reflection; and we do not even recognize ourselves [i.e. (even now), spiritual insurrection].

I love to listen to mood music of a much melodramatic nature. The drama about the revolution of life's purposefully erratic revolutions fascinates me. While giving this CD a first listen, I enjoyed the totality of the movement very much. However, what stood out most for me was the voice of Mr. Eric Clayton. Song number twelve amongst this musical masterpiece is my favorite. Select Secrets and Psychological Soliloquies: The Therapy Sessions: Volume One of the Poetic Short-Shorts Series

In closing, the journey returns us all to (within truth) simplicity... BUY THIS CD! The Ahriman Gate: Some Gates Should Not Be Opened
Legion Moves Over The Land
Submitted on: 2007-08-13
I remember when I first heard this CD. This was something out of a fairytale that you never thought that you would hear. It had drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and it wasn't cheasy at all. The voice, who could complain about listening to this man sing. Classically, just beautiful. I fell in love with the music, the emotional voice that Eric Clayton has and still has and the lyrics, they just didn't open your mind, they opened your eyes. I own the original release from '93 where is states "A man is nothing without the ability to open his mind". Legion was is the first song that kept my attention, I couldn't pull myself away from that song. I later moved on and found more just like that. Son of the rain, another monumental song. The Mask, who was assassinated? A World Alone, who would/could dispute this song. This song is what everyone is in their feelings. We all hate, love, bleed just the same as the person next to us. And who can forget about the closing song Jesus Christ. Very strong lyrics. To a Christian they could be taken out of contexted, they could be taken 10,000 different ways if not more. After listening to the song for 14 years now, I hope I finally got the meaning of what Eric is saying in the song to the listener about God and War. How it's all the same God they're praising, just with a different name and they all want the same, their enemies to die. There are some other songs on the CD that will make you want to purchase it also. Carnival of Souls, Christians and Lunatics (this song, goes way out there about who's right and who's wrong about Jesus.) This is a great CD, I highly recommend it for your collection. Listen to it and let the emotion of the music just take you away. Listen to the lyrics too. Music progress on in an artists carreer, I wish for one more Saviour Machine album like this to be release before Eric calls it quits.
Dark, melancholic, hopeful

These three words describe the feeling Saviour Machine's music gives: dark, melancholic yet hopeful...
The sounds are almost haunting, sad, aggressive at times, but overall they are full of despair! Saddness drips from every song... You can immagine Eric Clayton crying while singing with his huge operatic voice, trying to let the world see the abyss it's falling into!

The cd is pretty versatile, though it's not at all like Saviour Machine's latter works... The music is much more rockish and way faster... Eric's voice is not fully developed, though beautiful still... The piano is not as important as it's in their later albums, and their are also less symphonic parts...

This is my second fave SaMa album... But then: all of their music is great...
Unique, Mature, Artistic Gothic Rock/Metal!

I bought Saviour Machine's most recent disk, Legend III:I (2001), in early 2002 and immediately became a fan of the band. Well, I finally got around to checking out their first official recording, Saviour Macine I (1993), and all I can say is that I've been listening to it practically every day since!

Saviour Machine is a very hard band to classify. They are who they are and don't copy anyone. They're a "Christian band" in the sense that the members are definitely of the Christian persuasion and explore biblical topics, albeit in a very esoteric manner, but they're not like a lot of Christian bands that seem to be satisfied in essentially mimicking secular artists. Saviour Machine refuse to mimic anyone; they forge their own musical path.

So what does Saviour Machine's first album sound like? Well, if backed against a wall I'd describe it like this: Imagine an ultra-dramatic David Bowie fronting a band comprised of members of Therion, U2, Iron Maiden and My Dying Bride and you'd have a rough idea.

Some would probably categorize Saviour Machine as "progressive rock," but I disagree. I personally HATE progressive rock bands like Dream Theater. Such bands always seem more interesting in showing off their musical skills rather than simply writing good songs. Their music is always ridiculously over-polished and lacking raw edge. You'll note that Saviour Machine isn't like this at all; their sole focus is on writing good songs not masturbating on their instruments. A good example would be the 'lead solo' of the song "Killer." It's so simple and yet it gives you goose bumps!

The recording is so unique and involved that it's a bit hard to 'get into' the first few times you hear it. In fact, it's TOO much! Yet, after multiple hearings specific parts and songs begin to jump out at you. My favorite songs are "The Mask," "Killer," "Jesus Christ," "Christians and Lunatics," "Legion" and "Ludicrous Smiles." But, don't get me wrong, this is a CD where you just press 'play' and enjoy.

Whether or not a listener will appreciate Saviour Machine largely depends on if s/he likes Eric Clayton's voice, as his vocals are such a prominent feature throughout the recording. I'm not personally the biggest fan of his style of singing but I embrace him 100% because he is essentially what makes Saviour Machine who they are. (If you listen to their most recent disk, Legend III:I, you'll note that Eric has become quite a bit more varied in his vocalizations). Actually, I find Eric's vocal style kind of refreshing, especially after hearing Arch Enemy's latest CD which features exceptional music marred by utterly contrived, silly and monotonous cookie monster vocals (so the singer's a babe, so what?).

One reviewer describes Saviour Machine as "dark." This is only true in the sense that they are darkly mysterious not that their music will inspire one to commit suicide (like, say, My Dying Bride).

If you're a non-Christian don't let Saviour Machine's Christian beliefs prevent you from enjoying their music as their lyrical themes are presented in a very artistic, ambiguous manner. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, did you ever read "The Song of Solomon"?

I would put Saviour Machine I on an EQUAL level with the band's most recent work, Legend III:I. They're both very different platters, however (Legend III:I is heavier). In truth, they're both masterpieces of musical expression in the gothic rock/metal vein.
