Generic 1990 : This is Where She Lost It Submitted on: 2008-01-16 |

Listening to "New Inside" today, its crazy to think that this album is almost 20 years old. It actually sounds much, much older. In fact, I think I would place it at around 1985 in terms of production. Honestly, this is the worst produced Tiffany CD - its so scruffy, so muffled, and the instrumentation drowns out Tiffany's usually beautiful voice about 70% of the time.
Tiffany actually has one of the better back-catalogs of music albums when you compare her to many of her contemporaries. "New Inside" from 1990 was her third album, and it was released at a time when her popularity was crashing. Her 1988/1989 album "Hold an Old Friends' Hand" had sold poorly, and her producers told her to go with a hip new R&B sound to make a spirited comeback.
Bad Idea. The 'hip-hop' elements here are laughable. Even more bewildering is the production. Listen to this on hi-fi equipment and you will probably be nauseated at the weak production values and tawdry graphic equalizer used on every track. First Single "New Inside" has a very DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince vibe going for it, and is perhaps the most addictive chorus on the CD. Second track "It's You" is my personal favorite as it has a great melody, and a tune that sticks out much more so than any other song.
The positives end there though. "There Could Never" is a sappy album closer that never seems to end. "Never Run My Motor Down" sounds like a reject from her 1987 album, and there is virtually no other song here that you could possibly remember once you listen to the CD a couple of times. Why did this happen? How could they have thought this was marketable at the time?
When you compare this to Tiffany's first two albums, the stellar production on the first 2 CDs stand out starkly. Its as if this album was made by a completely different and inept performer! Noticeably, this remains Tiffany's most well-known flop and it yielded no hit singles either.
Tiffany would go on to release some acclaimed albums later in her career, but this remains her most shocking mis-step. I can't possibly recommend that you buy this (considering its officially out of print as well), but you might want to get it for about two solid tracks, thats about it.
Check out "Dreams Never Die", her album right after this one - its a major improvement. |

horrible Submitted on: 2005-12-06 |

I loved Tiffany when I was a preteen. I thought, and still think, she has an incredible voice and sweet, upbeat personality. However, when I heard this album way back in 1991, I couldn't help but laugh. It is horrible!!!! The sound was outdated even back then. She seemed to just try too hard. She whined and growled. Her attempt to promote herself through the song "Tiff's Back" was so pathetic. The only good song, in my opinion, is "Here in my Heart".
I think it is sad that she apparantly thought posing for Playboy and doing disgustiong dance moves would increase her record sales. She and other former pop stars like Debbie Gibson and New Kids on the Block really just needed to update their sound. Trashy lyrics and looks obviously did nothing for their careers. Too bad they didn't just rely on their talent and creativity as well as hire better arrangers and producers. |

Utterly Underrated Submitted on: 2005-01-08 |

Perhaps the least popular of Tiffany's albums, NEW INSIDE has obviously received the least acclaim of all the CDs this former teen idol has ever made. Even so, I see nothing wrong with it at all. True, I loved her previous work with her 1987 debut album--which I'll forever remember to be her BEST work--and her 1988 release HOLD AN OLD FRIEND'S HAND, but this CD still holds its own despite her digression from the 1980s California rock that made her a household name to early-1990s dance.
To begin with, NEW INSIDE combines a decent balance of high-energy dance songs with smooth, heart-warming love ballads, which Tiffany has proven to sing with intensity and conviction back in the late-80s. Likewise, despite what some other Tiffany fans (not to mention some jaded music critics) might otherwise suggest, our favorite redhead does sound more mature and sophisticated on this album than before, thanks in part to the music that accompanies her always-melodious voice. One particular song that proves both points is Diane Warren's "Here In My Heart," which I had heard before as performed by the Scorpions and the Berliner Philharmoniker on their 2000 release, MOMENT OF GLORY; indeed, Klaus Meine and Lyn Liechty performed that song well as a duet, but our girl Tiffany could easily compare with her 1990 recording. Of course, the other songs on this album can easily be classified as "ear candy" in their own right, especially the title track and the ballad "Tenderly." Very good stuff!
In short, NEW INSIDE may not have earned Tiffany a well-deserved Grammy, but it still deserves to be remembered in a positive light as an effort on behalf of her continuing efforts to define herself as one of the music industry's most talented, versatile, and--if you'll pardon the bad pun--"noteworthy" players. Way to sing it, Tiff! |
