90's nostalgia bangs to a Warrior's Drum! Submitted on: 2008-06-07 |

| Even making some noise in '95 with a couple solid bangers (remember "Warrior's Drum" and "No Flows On The Rodeo?") and being affiliated with The Wu Tang Clan couldn't help King Just from being anything but an overlooked footnote in mid-nineties hip hop... still though, for those that do remember him, or for those that maybe never have but are on the hunt for a "lost" album of head nodding goodness (that thankfully sounds nothing like most of todays "rap"), Mystics Of The God is a nice trip down memory lane. Armed with a bombastic flow (kinda in the vein of Busta Rhymes, ODB, Sticky Fingaz, etc.), solid lyrics, and excellent production from RNS (always underrated), E-Swift (of The Liks fame), Marcus Peake (?), and Easy Mo Bee; King Just was able to drop an album that still to this day (13 years later?!) harnasses what was so good about NYC rap at the time (and it ain't even close to the best album released that year... yet it's still dope!). Whatever happened to King Just? Well, he released a couple more albums independently but never made another mark in the hip hop landscape, and now he's running with U-Gods Hillside Scramblers (kinda unfortunate really). Honestly, nostalgia probably accounts for the 4th star in the rating, but anybody who likes 90's hip hop and missed this the first time should dust off the old Champion hoodie, imagine you're rolling in a jeep, and give this a bump... maybe even brown bag a malt beverage for the total effect! |
