What started it all... Submitted on: 2009-09-03 |

| While those who have come to admire their 2nd album and become critical of earlier recordings, I feel "Sexless" was a wonderfully disturbing mastery work of contribution to the music world. Every track is mesmerizing and becomes more so with each listen. This debut is not one to be missed. |

Good Sound Quality Submitted on: 2009-08-05 |

This is a review of the sound quality only.
Most non-classical, non-jazz disks produced in the last ten years suffer from whats called the 'loudness war' (google it if you don't know what it is). Basically it is an attempt to make the music as loud as possible so that it competes with whatever else is on your ipod. But there can only be so much signal pushed onto a disk, 0 dB is the max and nothing can change that. So what mastering guys (and increasingly mixing and recording guys) do is try to bring as much of the music as they can up to 0 dB without making the thing unlistenable. They want whispers to be as loud as screams, and everything to be one volume. This has the result of creating clipping, distortion, and zero dynamics. While this disk does suffer from some of this process, it is not too bad. It would be nice if there were some more dynamics making the disk punchier, giving the drums some testosterone.
I should probably note though, that in comparison to many current rock disks this one sounds fantastic; but the standards for sound quality are so low in the rock world right now, it is only hald a compliment. It is funny though, because the sound quality here surpasses the last disk I reviewed which was a $40 Japanese Jazz import. The loudness war has pretty much infected every genre except classical. |

I can't work out what this band is trying to do. There are elements of metal, punk, riot grrl, and grunge, all of which are handled in the most rudimentary way. If music is inconsequential to you and all you're looking for is a cute unconventional singer to worship, then Jack Off Jill may be the band for you. If you're looking for good tunes you won't find them here.

I love the group..... Submitted on: 2004-10-15 |

I love Jack Off Jill. I have to say that much, but this is the only album I OWN! I have currently ordered "Clear Hearts, Gray Flowers" and "Covetous Creature". I don't feel right in reviewing something until I actually have the CD accessible for me to listen to. In this case, I only have this album.
First things first. The album is solid, the music is good, and her vocal's are full of pent up rage as always. Those are the good points.
The bad ones....I found the songs uninspiring, and rather bland. It doesn't seem that they put their all into this album.
Once I get the other albums, I will review those, because I know "Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers" is an amazing album in itsself. |

On one level, I pity all the folks who think this is good music... It is neither creative nor innovative, only cliched and juvenile. This album sounds like something I would have written in high school. Not that high schoolers suck at writing...on the contrary, high school kids can be quite gifted, and these ladies are obviously not teenagers! On the other hand, and on another level, I can see how most people would like this crap. The general public has a limited idea of what good music and writing are... I am reserving judgement on Scarling, the singer's new band, until I hear it, because I am willing to bet that Jessicka has matured as a songwriter and musician... At least she should have by now.... it's been at least 4 years... For some really moving music, check out some Shostakovich string quartets, PLEASE! America needs more educated and cultured people. |
