 Being welcomed to the American pop world by "Now"

The very first "Now" album came out on October 20, 1998 in the United States, 14 years, 10 months, and 15 days after the very first "Now" album was released in the United Kingdom. This album contains 17 songs that were popular from mid-1997 to late 1998.
The album opens up with Janet Jackson's number-one hit "Together Again", which is a tribute to a friend of Jackson's dying after contracting HIV. This is followed the the Backstreet Boys' charming "As Long As You Love Me", Fastball's exquisite "The Way", and Harvey Danger's jumping "Flagpole Sitta".
We then shift into neutral with the Spice Girls' catchy "Say You'll Be There", and cool down with K-Ci & JoJo's number-one ballad "All My Life". The well-known spiritual "Amazing Grace" is revived in the contemporary world with the All Saints' "Never Ever", which features a rather annoying, monotone spoken introduction.
Tonic's "If You Could Only See" has us sitting down in our seats, but we jump back up as Hanson's infectious number-one "MMMBop" comes into view. We sit back down as the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' "Zoot Suit Riot" (which was the final song of the swing revival) blasts in our faces.
As we are finished with the first half of the album, the second half starts off with Imajin's "Shorty" and Brian McKnight's "Anytime". And, of course, everybody knows Aqua's horribly annoying "Barbie Girl". The haunting, dwelling "Karma Police" by Radiohead and Everclear's "I Will Buy You a New Life" doesn't really do us any good, until Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away" has us screaming before having the party end with Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy".

These compilations were never the best of the music at the time. Instead, they were the most popular. And what was popular at this point was mostly cheesy bubblegum pop.
Some of the songs are still good. "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger is a fun song, and "Zoot Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies is always a good time. You can't go wrong with Lenny Kravitz or Radiohead. "All My Life" by KC and JoJo pretty good, as well.
And then there's the not so good. The Hanson song is extremely dated and annoying, but it wasn't THAT bad. The song was targeted towards children, not adults. And don't be fooled by history revision: 90% of the people who claim to have hated Hanson all along had all the posters and the t-shirts and are just too embarrassed to admit it. The Spice Girls were crap and as for the Backstreet Boys, well, there are a lot of people out there doing history revision with them, this time to make them sound like they were a better band than they were. They were just another boy band and they were NOT the first, they were just the most popular.
A lot of it I don't even remember. I don't remember the All Saints, and, judging by the song, I had a good reason. The Janet song isn't my thing, but I guess it's a good time if you're into dance music. I don't remember Tonic at all.
All in all, it's not a very good record, but there are a few halfway decent songs. I wouldn't suggest buying it anymore, since compilation records are really dated at this point: you can go on iTunes and download most of the good songs sans the crap. It made a lot more sense at the time. However, if you're hellbent on buying one, I'm sure there are other compilations with better songs on it. |

This CD is so GOOD! It brings me back to my high school times...Good times :o)
I'm even happy to hear the song from the BSB that I never really liked that much then ( I was more Lenny Kravitz, Radio Head fan).
I'm more than sure that I'll be buying the others "Now" soon! |

 Where it all begins

| I bought this album when it originally came out in late 1998. Even though it's a good compilation for the most part some of the songs were already over a year old when this album was released. This would be corrected however in later volumes. Some of these artists aren't around anymore and some still are but this is definitely a good sample what was playing on the airwaves back then. By the way, notice how this album is totally devoid of hip hop music. |
