Customer Reviews of This Album/CD

A huge hit outside of America
Submitted on: 2009-11-09
I've noticed a few reviewers mentioning These Days was not a commercially successful album but the truth is this was an incredibly successful album both commercially and critically all around the world the only exception being America.

In Europe, Japan and Australia These Days topped the album charts for weeks at a time. Here in the UK These Days spent 4 weeks at the top and Jon and the boys reaction to debuting straight in at number 1 and kicking aside Michael Jackson can be seen in the Live in London concert dvd. These Days holds the record for the band to spawn the most Top 10 singles, with four singles charting on the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart (This Ain't a Love Song, Something for the Pain, Lie to Me and These Days).

These Days is the most diverse and dark album Bon Jovi has ever realised and quite possibly the most brilliant as well.

A masterpiece!
The Dark Side

In 1995, Bon Jovi presented fans with their darkest, most serious, and probably least accessible album yet, entitled These Days. Here the band has taken it's more serious approach on 1992's Keep the Faith (my favorite from them at that point) and depressed the hell out of it. This is a sad and sometimes sinister album, embodied by beautiful songwriting and true musicianship. And while it may contain more ballads than any other Bon Jovi album, even in future releases, there's no syrup to sap them up. It is with these reasons that this is the band's least accessible album, being way too depressing, serious, and unique for the casual Bon Jovi fan to digest easily (this may also have been the cause for this to be a lesser commerical effort). However it is with these reasons that this is not just my favorite Bon Jovi album, but probably the most emotional album I've ever heard. Jon isn't singing to his 13-year-old-girl fanbase here, the lyrics sound so personal which is what makes them so moving and great overall. This trend of serious songwriting started with Keep the Faith and sadly ended here, before the poison of radio filled the band's blood once again (not to say the other material is bad, just not as good as their two '90s albums). But this band has always possessed great talent and could always churn up catchy melodies, which makes them one of the great American rock bands.

I will admit, Bon Jovi is the reason why I got into music. It was actually Slippery When Wet that got my whole music train a rollin', the first album I ever bought. I bought when I was 11 years old back in 2001 (I'm 19 now). And since then my musical tastes have greatly evolved, but never changed. This is why Bon Jovi will always have a special place in my life, and this album will never fail to move me.

And for my finale, I'll present to you my Top 5 favorite albums of all time (not necessarily in order) just to give you an idea of how my tastes have evolved:

~ Jethro Tull: "Thick as a Brick"
~ Pink Floyd: "Wish You Were Here"
~ Dream Theater: "Octavarium"
~ Queen: "A Night at the Opera"
~ Bon Jovi: "These Days"

Peace!
Simple Review

Highlights: These Days (it seemed like Bon Jovi was the only real rock band in 1995 to dare to release a traditional rock album after Nirvana "grungeified" everything to crap - to me this song lamented that condition), This Ain't a Love Song, Lie to Me, (It's Hard) Letting You Go, Hearts Breaking Even. Lowlights: I'm not a big fan of Hey God, and Damned but they're ok. All the other song are good or really good. My favorite Bon Jovi album although on a point scale I rank Have a Nice Day just slightly higher. I didn't realize this was a "darker" album until recently - This was always my cheer me up and get me going album. Excellent Album. Bon Jovi at their best.
Always a pleasure.

Without doubt THE BEST Bon Jovi album! Jon and Richie sound superb together on tracks such as "Hearts breaking even" and "letting you go". I will not buy the remastered version but am on the lookout for an original as my 5 year old son took it out of the CD player and scratched it. Muscially, this has a lot of awesome riffs, drums, bass and keyboards that keep you wanting for more. This is a CD that should be in Everyone's collection, fan or not!
