Worth The Money! Submitted on: 2009-07-12 |

I really enjoyed this album - Shpongle are the first band I have listened to belonging to the psytrance/ambient genre, and I have to say that I am impressed. I loved the tribal feel of 'Divine Moments of Truth', and the sheer beauty of '...And the Day Turned to Night' and Raja Ram does a superb job on the flute.
My biggest qualms, however, are with the gratuitous and often superfluous voice samples used throughout. They seem to take away, rather than to add or contribute, to the album as a whole. In this way, they remind me of the Bill Hicks sample at the beginning of 'Third Eye' by Tool, which leaves the bitter taste of esoteric jargon in the mouth of the listener and the embarrassing sense that somewhere there is a stoned college kid nodding his head in emphatic and reverent assent.
My only other (minor) issue is with the occasionally out of place and irritating beeps and bleeps that have the awkwardness of farts and appear like flies in a soup that is otherwise delicious. I know what one reviewer meant when they said that this album has a cartoonish feel, and that they had trouble taking it seriously. I think, however, that one should not attempt to listen to Shpongle with a great deal of seriousness, but instead with a light heart and an open mind.
This album can be enjoyed by people of any age and I do not think you have to be into psychedelics to fully appreciate the beauty and skill of Shpongle, although its inner pretensions and cabalistic - though not entirely meaningful - messages may go amiss on some not educated in the field of hallucinogens and the subculture that orbits them. |

You can't ask for at least 20, okay...19:57 minutes of a group.
I got this cd after tales of the inexpressible (a better cd) however,
...and the day turned into night is an excellent reason alone to give this cd 5 stars. sure its not all great but a majority of it is.
shpongle spores, behind closed eyelids, monster falls support this first foray by posford and ram. I don't care how they did it. if you don't like this music you don't like music then.
I really don't think you need to be high to enjoy this as long as your imagination is as rampant and vivid as the music is.
Take it with you in the car and let it go. you will find that you like
this much better instead of the radio.
happy listening! |

Are You Shpongled is a gateway cd Submitted on: 2009-01-18 |

"Are You Shpongled?" caught my attention several years ago in a CD rack at a small "alternative" store (ie, not a chain) with its cover art that referenced Pink Floyd and the title that referenced Hendrix. So, even though I had never heard of Shpongle before I plunked down my money and bought it feeling that I would at least be very intrigued by the contents. When I finally got home that night and played it I was, to say the least, extremely surprised and was hooked on Sphongle and later Hallucinogen another of Posford's projects.
"Are You Shpongled?" is one of my favorite goa-trance albums. There is a definite theme around alien visitation, expanded conciousness, shamanistic mysticism, and the mysteriousness of the mind not usually heard in music that is commonly called goa-trance which is too often just 21st century disco music. |

Best electronica to date Submitted on: 2008-07-19 |

I'm a huge fan of all Shpongle's albums (including the remixes) and cannot recommend them enough. Each album offers something so remarkable, yet so distinct that no album will leave you bored because it sounds too much like the last one.
"Are you Shpongled?" is probably my favorite, although the others come in a close second. This truly is unlike any group or artist you will hear; top notch production, crazy sounds I didn't know existed, and the beautiful flow of each song make this essential "psytrance goa" or whatever you wanna call it. The extraordinary mix of natural instruments with digital ones and the progressive nature (I really prefer progressive rock/metal as opposed to regular rock/metal for example) of the music help create astounding electronica. It's not overwhelming either. Much of the music is very ambient and relaxing without that repetitive, overbearing beat that plagues too many trance songs these days. |
