Speaking as a person who took l.s.d. at the age of 3 I say that this Surfers album can be summed up with these words: dread, downer, durge, bummer, a BAD TRIP. It sucks. For masochists.
The short duration of listening to this 30 minutes feels like an eternity of crap.
So if you want to feel bad, exactly like a bad trip, then buy this. If you want to feel happy and glad, buy Hairway to Steven, Pioughd, or Worm Saloon. |

 The real soundtrack to an acid trip

Man, this stuff is delightfully weird. The Butthole Surfers drew me based on the fact that there stuff is weird, though I never would have guessed that from the only song I ever heard from them for a long time, Dracula From Houston. Then I heard Who Was In My Room Last Night, and it freaked the ____ out of me! Now that I can listen to weird things and glance at weirds things without breaking a sweat (in fact, I'm drawn to the odd, dark, and twisted at times). So early Butthole Surfers is supposed to be like a bad acid trip, huh. Well, I've never done acid, but I think Pittsburgh to Lebanon, with it's fuzzed out feedback, crazy vocals, lumbering beat, and an overall feel of seeing weird things disjointed probably makes that "supposed" disappear. Awesome!
Describing their music is sometimes difficult, though this is my first full length Butthole Surfers album. It's over rather quickly, and there plenty on this album that will keep you interested. Heck, some of these songs must be heard. Kuntz, my personal favorite, takes an already alien Thai song. The O-Men, with it's driving, plodding beat, has Gibby Haynes going nuts yabbering gibberish which is inspired lunacy. Graveyard has vocals that one would probably hear on an acid trip (maybe I'm basing my observation on "The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer" when he sees Nelson, Flanders, and Mrs. Krabbapall talking). Human Cannonball has an insane wail and is the most straightforward. And starting with Ozzy's classic ode to pot Sweet Leef (covered and retitled to Sweat Loaf) just sets the tone well. I like the bit on Hay as well. In short, this album should at least listened to.
You may hate this album or you may not, but some of this stuff should be heard at least once. Of course, you would probably become more aquainted to it if your interested in this sort of music anyway. Check it Out

i remember when this disc came out. Seperated the men from the boys. If you were a poser claiming to like this band, this stuff either left you wondering what hit you or got you kicked outta the party for playing it! I knew a guy who would leave the room, physically ill, upon hearing the opening to sweatloaf and knowing what was about to come. When Gibby screams "Satan"...this guy would lose it.
If you never saw this band before they signed(and ripped off) capitol records, you missed a once in a millenium experience. Grotesque medical movies projected on the wall behind the stage, a naked, ugly, covered in paint, female dancer, TWO drummers STANDING at their sets, more strobe lights than 10 floyd concerts, Paul Leary's one of a kind sonic guitar assault...and that was on an off nite....
Wanna annoy somebody...roomate...landlord...ex-lover, play this thing as loud as you can stand it and giveyerself a sonic-psychic enema at the same time.
You don't need any chemical enhancements with this stuff...it is a drug (mind expanding) unto itself. Consult a physician before administering and do not operate heavy machinery while undre the influence...
by the way, that's their dog (named "mark farner"...really!)on the cover with the clowns. He traveled with them for years. |
