An Amazingly Beautiful Piano/Vocal Jazz CD
Submitted on: 2009-08-08
When I Look Into Your Eyes by Diana Krall is a CD that I have had for some number of years, but it has gone in and out of my listening rotation based on the "phase" that I'm in. However, this is one of my absolute favorite piano/vocal jazz CDs in my entire collection. When I Look Into Your Eyes is a collection of cover tunes, and as such it is more instructive to limit evaluation to the instrumentation and vocal delivery. One of the things that make this CD so great is that it strikes a wonderful balance in tracks that incorporate an orchestra and those that do not. The title track has a broad, sweeping sound backed by the Orchestra, but it is also strikingly beautiful and simple on the verses as Krall's vocals are backed by guitar with faint orchestral strings. Other standout orchestral tracks are "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Why Should I Care" - the hidden Track 13. Her vocal delivery conveys powerful emotion that will strike all but the most calloused listener. Contrast this sound against the more playful and traditionally instrumented "Devil May Care", "Popsicle Toes", and "East Of The Sun (And West Of The Moon)". Krall's piano playing is as prominent on these tracks as her vocals are. You could easily imagine hearing these tunes live in a jazz club/restaurant setting. The split is almost 50/50 (7 orchestral, 5 not) on the When I Look Into Your Eyes, and it creates a very balanced, enjoyable listening experience.

If you are not familiar with Diana Krall, When I Look Into Your Eyes is a good place to start. It is a richly balanced collection of piano jazz vocal tunes.

Smooth and Silky delivered with Soul

This album like all of Diana Krall's work is a joy to the ears. Her phrasing and execution of the standards is akin to Frank Sinatra's delivery. I bought this CD after hearing the cut "I've Got You Under My Skin" on the radio. Another standout on the CD is "When I Look In Your Eyes". All songs are smooth and silky, delivered by an incredibly beautiful lady, both physically and soulfully. If you love Diana Krall you will love this album and will want it in your collection. I am excited about her upcoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl (August 19, 2009) and will be there readily awaiting her blessing!
There's something fine about Diana Krall...

There's just something fine about Diana Krall's music... Maybe its her soft voice and smooth transitions, or maybe its those sexy, romantic lyrics against a deep jazz backdrop that paint pictures of warm nights and companionship. Whatever is, nearly every Diana Krall album is worth a good listening to.
The Look of Love

This album is Diana Krall at her best. She has a voice that is truly unique. If you love the slow, easy going love ballads, this is as good as it gets. The orchestra background is superb. Looking forward to her latest recordings.
Popsicle toes.

This is the perfect album to play when you're home alone, with no lights on -- perhaps listening by candlelight -- with a bottle of wine. Chill...
