| Awesome 80's hair metal/rock music. Has a theme song from Nightmare on Elm Street (Dream Warriors). Range of slow melodic rock and typical hair metal faster paced songs. Great buy & good price - would highly recommend to add this to your collection!!! |

 Average Compilation for an Average 80s Band

On paper, Dokken should've been the ultimate 80s metal band: a pounding, powerful rythm section, beautiful three part vocal harmonies and amazing lead work courtesy of resident guitar hero George Lynch. Sadly, the band didn't really deliver on their painfully average albums: maybe it was Don Dokken's lack of charisma as a vocalist, Lynch's rather pedestrian riffs, the band's obsessive trend chasing or simply a chronic lack of truly memorable songs, who knows. Eventually, the band came and went without making an impact on the metal scene and could never move beyond their second-tier band status as the decade progressed, with George Lynch's incredible talent ultimately (and unjustly) forgotten outside shred guitar nerd circles.
Listening to all the songs up to Walk Away in one sitting, I can't help but feel sorry that the band didn't pursue a speedier, harder, more traditional metal direction like they did in Tooth and Nail, the only truly inspired masterpiece of the bunch where the band manages to give Judas Priest a run for their money and Lynch's blazing solo leaves you speechless.
That said, this compilation mostly succeeds at collecting all of Dokken's minor hit singles and a handful of their best lesser known tracks, but it could've been much better had it replaced Don Dokken's solo tune and a tepid reunion song with some non-single gems like Unchain the Night or Kiss of Death. For someone with a passing interest in 80s hair metal, this is a very solid purchase, mostly because of Lynch's lead work. |

Paris Still Burns Thanks To This Greatest Hits Album

I grew up during the 80's and early 90's. I cut my teeth on bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. I was never a huge fan of Dokken, but was always aware of them. When I saw this greatest hits album, I decided to give it a whirl. What I found was an excellent album containing some solid 80's hair/hard rock. I'll admit that I hadn't heard most of the songs in this collection while I was growing up. "Mr. Scary," "It's Not Love" and "Tooth and Nail" were the only songs that I was really familiar with. I knew about George Lynch's guitar pedigree and actually purchased his "Lynch Mob: Wicked Sensation" album when it was originally released.
What I've come to find with Dokken is that they are an excellent blend of Don Dokken's melodic vocals and lyrics of love both won and lost and the "edge of madness" sound of Lynch's guitar. In every song you can almost hear Lynch begging to be cut loose on his axe.
Highlights of this album include all of the aforementioned tunes as well as "The Hunter," "In My Dreams" and "Into The Fire." Seven albums are represented here, ranging from 1983 to 1995 (including Don Dokken's solo effort). The bulk of the material is culled from the group's first four albums, "Breaking The Chains," "Tooth And Nail," "Under Lock And Key" and "Back For The Attack."
If you're a fan of melodic rock, hair metal, glam or 80's hard rock, give Dokken a try. This album impressed me enough to seek out a couple of the group's original albums. There were a lot of hair bands in the 80's, and Dokken truly deserved more attention than they received. |

When a supposed hard rock band doesn't have any good hooks, vocal melodies, or guitar solos, you know you're in for a tough listen.
Dokken fits that description perfectly, I'm afraid. Maybe a threatening rock band at one point in time, nowadays their music just sounds like mindless party rock without really rocking out. Their music is so unmemorable that you can basically treat it as background music.
At least bands like Motley Crue and Ratt have some decent choruses from time to time. The music on this Dokken disc is just friendly music that passes by harmlessly. There's nothing about the singers vocal style, the melodies themselves, or the guitar solos that catch my attention. Basically Dokken has nothing going for them other than a reminder they used to be a fairly popular rock act, and were a distinct part of the 80's decade.
I can't recommend a purchase for anything this band has done. They just didn't write music that was very interesting to me. If you like the band, that's fine with me. Maybe other people can find some things about the band to like. |
