"A real treat, so indulge and let yourself go" Submitted on: 2000-06-11 |

| As one of the great vocalist of our times discovered very early in his career, that the low notes is where the money is, so stated by Mr. Bing Crosby. Suddenly all the singers were baritones or lower, but one singer stood his ground and alone, Johnny Hartman (1923 - 1983), perhaps the greatest of all postwar balladeers (beyond Sinatra, that is), was even smoother than Mr. B. himself. Hartman sought to combine Sinatra-style ultra legato lines and Eckstinian vocal richness, "MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE" (Hartman & John Coltrane) is a classic example. Good to hear the "Count" on two tracks - "EVERY DAY I HAVE THE BLUES" (Joe Williams & Count Basie) and "ARE YOU HAVIN' ANY FUN"? (Tony Bennett & Basie), with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, packs that ever familiar sound that has never been duplicated. A few stand outs - "BIJOU" (Lambert, Hendricks & Ross) and "MORE THAN YOU KNOW" (Kay Starr) and "THE NEARNESS OF YOU" (Sarah Vaughan) Sarah sang the verse, which is just as beautiful as the chorus. Highlight is - "SWEET AND SLOW" (Carol Sloane) real low-down, blues as only Carol can do. A must have for any jazz collector, many have never been on compilation before. This is a real treat, so indulge and let yourself go with one of the best "essentials" in jazz you'll ever hear. All you can say is, "we want more of the same, more jazz vocal essentials, please"! Total Time: 65:31 on 17 Tracks/ Hip-O Records - HIPD 40164 (1999) |
