ONLY FOR THE MOST DIEHARD COUNTRY ROCK FAN Submitted on: 2009-08-28 |
|
| The late 60's-early 70s country rock explosion sort of defined a California-laid back-mellow, but hip, sound that enjoyed enormous popularity among fans as diverse as the hippie counterculture to mainstream American college campuses and households. There was something for everyone's taste from the ubiquitous Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds and CSN & Young and of course The Band, to lesser exposed artists like Poco, The Flying Burrito Bros. and Desert Rose. Pure Prairie league didn't get a lot of air time or much attention in mass audiences until their smash hit "Amie". That toe-tappin, makes-you-feel-like-dancin', terrific blend of harmonic voices and music left this country rock afficionado dying to hear more of Pure Prairie League. I purchased the album " Bustin' Out" and while I wasn't disappointed, I wasn't thrilled either. That being said, if you are whole-heartedly into MELLOW, you will probably like Pure Prairie League. This Greatest Hits recording has most of their best early work such as " You're Between Me" and " It's All On Me" and " She Darked Me". This recording also pairs " Falling In And Out Of Love" with "Amie" by listing the former track just before the latter. Listening to "Amie" that way is much superior to how it was played on its own on the radio so often. But here's the thing, Pure Prairie League just doesn't stand up to the likes of CSN & Young or The Band or even some of the lesser country rock groups. For the diehard country rock collector who wants to dig deeper into PPL, buy this recording. For the casual fan who loved "Amie", download "Falling In And Out Of Love" and "Amie in that order. That's why I Pods and MP3 Players were invented. |

| This a very good compilation of their music and if you are going to buy just one album by this artist I would recommend this highly. |

Needs Some More Tunes Submitted on: 2007-05-01 |
|
| I'm a PPL fan from way back, and recently a tune stuck in my mind and I had to spend an hour going through the samples to finally find it. The tune, "Son Shone Lightly" is on "If The Shoe Fits," their 4th album. Why is it not included here? And ditto as another reviewer suggested for "Country Song"? Other than omissions, this is a decent collection. If you're a true fan, just get the albums. |

Great Music But.. Submitted on: 2005-11-10 |

| The sound quality is the worst of any post-70's CD in my collection. I have CD's recorded in the forties that sound better than this! Either the master tape has been lost or someone won't part with it long enough for a digital transfer to be made. This sounds like a copy of a copy of a copy of the master, and made on poor equipment to boot. This, however, is our reality, like it or not, and if you're like me and you must own it "for better or worse", then you'll pull out your wallet and be happy with it because the individual CD's that this is culled from don't sound any better. (sigh) |
