| Come Out And Play was the follow up to the Multi-Platinum Smash Stay Hungry from Twisted Sister.Unfortunately,the follow up didnt live up to expectations.Personally i love the Album and i feel it is a batch of really good songs.Most people were turned off by the Lead Single "Leader Of The Pack" which was a remake of the 60's hit song by an all girl group.But if they had listened to the Entire Album with smashing tracks like "Come out and Play" and "You Want What We Got" they would realize this is one that delivers the goods."The Fire Still Burns" is still a Really Heavy Track and a Fan Favorite played at most of their gigs.If you like TS and Dee Snider give it a shot its worth it. |

I Believe In Twisted Sister

In 1984, thanks to their big MTV hit "We're Not Gonna Take It," Twisted Sister were catapulted into the mainstream with said number's rather cartoonish accompanying video that received repeated airings on the cable music channel. I really think that that's what MTV did to this great long running New Jersey hard rock/heavy metal institution -- painted them into a corner with a new image that in reality their classic heavy metal sound didn't fully support. "Stay Hungry," the band's third album which contained the aforementioned single, peaked at #15 on the U.S. charts whereas the follow-up "Come Out and Play," released in December of 1985, didn't even manage to crack the Billboard Top 50. That's truly a shame, because the album being reviewed here "Come Out and Play" is the better album and remains one of the best releases from one of the best heavy metal bands America had to offer in the '80s.
I truly think that everybody was expecting more funny videos and cartoonish imagery, but at the core of it "Come Out and Play" is just classically inspired heavy metal at its finest. Sure, there are a couple more commercial numbers to be found here, most notably "Be Chrool To Your Scuel," which even enlisted the likes of Billy Joel (!) on piano, but I think that people who only focus on that are missing out on some classic metal numbers and "Come Out and Play" has them in droves. "You Want What We Got" is a true headbanging anthem about people who put others down, out of secret feelings of insecurity and jealousy. This is a theme that anybody can relate to and that was previously addressed in the punk realm by Black Flag on the song "Rise Above." "I Believe In Rock 'N Roll" is an ode to heavy metal music that ranks with other songs from the past that have dealt with a love for the music, such as Rainbow's "Long Live Rock & Roll." The final two tracks on the original LP are sure to get your neck bobbin' and air guitar playin', namely the great riffing to be found on "Lookin' Out For #1" and the fast heavy metal of "Kill or Be Killed." I say the original LP because the track to close the CD is "King of the Fools," which was not on the original vinyl record but was on the cassette that I have. (According to a rock discography book that I have, this album was also available on CD even with its original 1985 release, when CDs were still a brand new thing, so maybe this song was also on the initial CD pressing.) Finally, I have to recommend the ballad here "I Believe In You," which features a simply beautiful melody and vocal performance from Dee Snider.
This band does not get the credit it deserves for its contributions to American heavy metal and one listen to "Come Out and Play" should prove the naysayers wrong. Classic metal here. |

 Great CD if you give it a chance

Here is the major problem with this CD...they made 2 very cheesey unfunny video's that made Twisted Sister look very uncool. If they made a cool concert type video for the title track, lets just say, I think this album would have exploded. I am a Twisted fan, and it took me forever to give this CD a try, because I hated the 2 singles they released...but after listening, this is a really good CD. And even if you take away the horrible video's, Be Cruel to your Skewl and Leader of the Pack arent bad songs. Leader of the Pack, along with a ton of other songs, they covered in concert for a very long time, and they thought it was a way to give back to their long time devoted fans. Honestly, they should have picked a different song...if they wanted to release it as the first single. If this was just a song at the end of the CD, it would have been great. But because of the way it was handled, it made them look very uncool at the time. Too bad, for a band that really knows how to rock hard...
I am telling you give this cd a try...there are really good songs on here...the title track alone may be my favorite twisted sog in their catalouge!! |

| I have all of Twisted sisters albums and obviously opinions are like... Stay Hungry has their 2 most recognisable tunes but this is even still more consistently anthemic which is what most people love about this band. My personal belief on why it didn't carry on where Stay Hungry left off is down to a few reason. I don't believe it was a backlash from radio stations in retaliation to Dee's defiance toward the PMRC but more a very poor choice of singles to promote the album. The tracks they chose, "be cruel to your school" and "leader of the pack" are the worst tracks on the album! Elsewhere the title track is as rollicking a metal song as you would here anywhere. You can hear what Dee means when he said he wanted this band to by a hybrid of ACDC and Judas Priest. And there are plenty of great rock & roll chanting anthems like "believe in rock n roll", "I know what you want" etc. For me the stand out tune on this cd is "out on the streets". Everything about it is beautifully constructed and it is a song that Dee should be forever proud for writing. It has an epic build up with a great, melodic chorus. When I first got this release it had Stay hungry on one side and Come out and play on the other. More often than not I would keep fast forwarding Stay Hungry to re-listen to this. Oh yeah. Dieter Dieks (spelling?) who many a rock fan would be familiar with for producing classic Scorpions has given this album an excellent shine and crunch! Regardless of the ordinary singles this album should not have been the failure that it unfortunately was. They're back, but is it too late? |
