Classic melodic rock - remastered
Submitted on: 2008-04-12
I've long since given up trying to figure out why some bands make it and others fail to do so, but you really have to wonder why XYZ never really reached the same level of success as bands like Steelheart or Firehouse. They had a great sound that should have gone over quite well in the late 80s, and yet I don't recall ever hearing their music or seeing any MTV videos back then, and I was a total junkie for this kind of music.

1991's Hungry is the band's second album, and picks up right where their self-titled debut left off. It doesn't stray too far from the typical hair metal sound that was so popular at the time, but two elements of XYZ's style really stand out. The first is singer Terry Ilous, who sounds like a more soulful (and less piercing) Mike Matijevic (of Steelheart). The second is the band's incredible use of melodies. This melodic approach puts XYZ on the same level as bands like Hurricane, Hardline, and Winger, and makes for some seriously catchy melodic rock. When the Night Comes Down and Shake Down the Walls are terrific rock anthems, and are the album's standout tracks, but the rest of the songs are just as impressive.

Hungry is hair metal at its finest. If you're still into hair metal and 80's rock, you'd do well to add some XYZ to your collection.

NOTE: French reissue label Axe Killer reissued Hungry in 2001 with digitally remastered sound and a bonus studio track called Two Wrongs Can Make a Right. The extra song and improved sound quality make this the best version of Hungry to buy.
Good album, yet somewhat different from the first

This album is a little more raw and has more of a "live" sound then the Don Dokken produced first album. Most of the songs are hard rockers with heavy guitars and very little or no keyboards. This disc needs a few spins to get used to, where as the first album had some commercial songs that you loved right away. My favorite track is "When I Find Love," a song that starts with accoustic guitar and a great vocal, then transforms itself into a huge, heavy ballad.
XYZ rocks!!!

XYZ was a lesser known pop metal band that came along too late to cash in the 80's metal scene. This was XYZ's second album (1991) which is far better and more lethal than their first. There is no weak material on here and the production is great as well.It has some sizzling guitar riffs and great vocals. The best way to describe XYZ's sound is that it's just like Dokken, but in some ways better. If you like bands like Whitesnake,Slaughter,Skid Row,and of course,Dokken, then don't miss out on this one.Pick it up.You'll be glad you did.
XYZ should've made it big!!!!

XYZ delivers a classic metal ballad on this album with "When I Find Love" The harmonies, drums, and great guitar chops along with some brillant lyrics make this song a true metal classic in my opinion. I believe this song was very overlooked by radio and MTV at the time of the album's release; as XYZ comes along at the end of the 80s metal era just a bit too late to put them over the top.
This is an import disc, and I believe it was remastered by the import company. And I must say, they did a great job with the sound on this disc.
Xyz truly is hungry!

This is a terrific follow up to a first record! The guitars on this are lethal. Face down in the gutter comes on and kicks your ass, so does don't say no. My favorite one is When the night comes down. When I find love is a great ballad. HH boogie has a kind of blues thing going on in it. If you liked the first one, you will love this one, and this band after some time off has some new stuff out there now too, which I have heard some of it, and so far I think it's fairly decent. I tried to see this band about 3 times and it always got messed up can you believe it! But pick up hungry yesterday!
