Well...Not As Good As SSDH & CF, But Still Awesome! Submitted on: 2006-08-07 |

This was the debut album by The Distillers. It's very good, but not nearly as good as the next two releases. Brody's voice sounds a bit different on this album. Her vioce is still fabulous, but it wasn't really perfected untill the band's softmore effort, Sing Sing Death House. Kim is really not as good of a bassist as Ryan Sinn, who wouldn't join untill the next record. Mat Young is not a bad drummer at all, but there's nothing really unique or special about him. Andy Outbreak is much better.
COMMENSE THE BREAKDOWN!
1.Oh Serena
5/5 Fabulous opener. One of my favorites.
2.Idoless
4/5 It's pretty cool. Kinda sounds like a Casualties song, except with Brody on vox.
3.The World Comes Tumblin'
4.5/5 Wow, this is a good song. Very sweet chorus!
4.L.A. Girl
5/5 Holy crap! This is one of my favorite tracks on the album!
5.Distilla Traunt
4/5 I like it.
6.Ask The Angels
5/5 Rockin song!
7.Oldscratch
5/5 43 seconds of pure bliss! But it's sadly followed by,
8.Girl Fixer
2/5 ugh. My least favorite Distillers song, and is really the only Distillers song I don't like. Kim really doesn't even begin to compare with Brody.
9.Open Sky
4/5 Good song. The intro is very good. But the verses are repeditive, and I don't like the bass solo too much. Like I said, Kim is no where near as good as Ryan Sinn.
10.Red Carpet And Rebellion
4.5/5 It's pretty good.
11.Colossus U.S.A.
4.5/5 Wow, this song has possibly one of the best intros of all time. This would've gotten a 4 if it wasn't for that incredible intro.
12.Blackheart
3.5/5 I've never really taken so much intrest in this song. Kim's backing vocals really annoy me on this one. I guess it's okay.
13.Gypsy Rose Lee
6/5 One of the best Distillers songs! I just love it sooooo much! It's the only song that accually made me cry at one point. Very emotional, very powerful, very great!
14.The Blackest Years
Infinity/5 Best song on the whole CD! There's literally nothing to not like about it. It's perfect! It's one of my three favorite Distillers songs(I Am A Revenant, Hall Of Mirrors, The Blackest Years).
Hidden Track
2.5/5 It's an earlier version of Young Girls, and it's nowhere near as good as the version found on SSDH. I'm sorry, but I just don't like it.
In conclusion, alright it's deffidently not as good as the next Distillers releases. Once SSDH came along, they're sound really improved and was perfect.
But if you want a true punk album with the classic formula of lightning fast, raw, hardcore, then pick this up. It's The Distillers for God's sake! Anything they put out is magnificent! Pick this up, along with all of their other albums.
DISTILLERS FOREVER!!! |

| fantastic, poingnet, well played and written rock music. This is old school punk with sharper teeth than most modern bands and many seminal 60's/70's,pre punk/garage and early 80's punk and punk/rock acts(forgoing the stage antics). my assumption is that this is a group with a strong/meaningful grasp of history. |

I wanna be like Brody when I grow up... Submitted on: 2005-04-02 |

So some of today's punk rock purist say the Distilers are for posers, but they can sod off. This album is fabulous. Hard, fast, and totally passionate. The Distillers makes your blood pump faster, and adrenaline surge throught your veins. The songs have that beautiful simplicity and edge that is almost completely unique to the late seventies punk scene. Brody does proud to the old and all but forgotten tradition of great female-fronted punk acts like The Slits, The X Ray Spex, and The Plasmatics.
My personal favorite tracks off this album are "The World Comes Temblin'," "L.A. Girl," and "Open Sky," but there's a lot of great tunes here. Pop it in, pump it up, and slamdance-round your living room! |
