Infectious Groove Submitted on: 2006-02-22 |

This is a seminal performance by Charlie Hunter, The guy who said it is "indicative of the current identity crisis in Jazz" is wrong: This CD shows Charlie Hunter as being one of the few true answers to where Jazz actually is at--and it is grooving its butt off.
The percussion is phenomenal, I am a drummer and the beats are great. Charlie's style is excellent for leaving all the space for the others to get in there and contribute to the groove. The trombone solos are great to hear, it has been a while since I've been exposed to as interesting solos.
And, this is all without being overly pretentious or technical. That is the thing that really popularizes Charlie Hunter's music, but it is definitely improvisation, grooving Jazz. This one has nice horn arrangements, and it features some of Charlie's best bass, and guitar, the bass stays in the pocket and on the beat. I have stopped looking for a technician to inspire me a long time ago. The most live portion of the Jazz movement is the area of groove-oriented Jam-band and world music fusion. There is a lot of heart in this performance and I plan on listening to this infectious groove more and more often in the future. |

| I had seen Charlie Hunter live a couple of times over the years, but this is the first of his CDs I've bought. The first time I heard it, I was a little disapoited, somehow. But, upon repeated listens, I've grown to really like this disc. I'm no music expert, so I can't tell you what's so good about it technically, but it's just a solid album that is pleasant to hear. If you are a fan, or have seen him live, and are thinking of buying this CD, I say "Go for it!" |

c.h. is loosing it... Submitted on: 2001-01-14 |

| ...that funky ,hip jazz sound that bridged the gap between old school jazz fans and a younger audience, without beeing unstylish or too technical. I think that with bing, bing, bing (and the following two albums) he took the classic blue note sound into the nineties. this latest release sounds like a couple of music college graduates showing off what they've just learned(the sidekicks that is).sureley they are doing fine playing their instruments - but that's it! gone is the groove and the freshness of the old releases, especially when it comes to the horn lines and improvisations. I mean charlie isn't bad, don't get me wrong. what he does is still unique and I don't mind if an artist grows into something else, but this is the wrong direction! |

Very tight and smooth Submitted on: 2000-12-29 |

| This album blew me away. The arrangments and freedom and groove had me instantly hooked. Every so often an album will come around and knock your socks off leaving you craving more and more. Well, this is one of those albums. It is good to Charlie and Leon Parker taking where they left off with Duo, to a whole new level. They are the main componenets here, while several songs incorporate the full band with Apfelbaum, Roseman, and Perkins displaying pure complimentary additions. This album is truly a treat and recommend it to anyone who knows the band. |
