Wonderful musical, but not a very wonderful recording Submitted on: 2009-11-14 |

I was really disappointed with this recording. Simply put, I saw the movie version and LOVED the vocal power and music power in it. William Katt could sure bust out a tune! He can still sing today, I've heard recent recordings and he is simply an awesome singer. THe other day, I found a copy of this in HMV and bought it, and brought it home, because, first of all, I LOVE Pippin, and second, I'm in a production of Pippin right now. And... I was disappointed.
BEN VEREEN: I love Ben Vereen, but not on this recording. He sounds as if he's singing a soft lullaby. Pippin is supposed to be anything but that. Simple Joys is especially disappointing too.
JOHN RUBINSTEIN: Better than Katt? Really?? REALLY?????? A soft, thin, powerless voice is better than a stronng and powerful voice??? Here, he sounds dreadful. When he sings CotS, you don't believe him.
LELAND PALMER: Not bad! She is phenomenal on this recording, Spread a Little Sunshine has gotten dozens of repeat value because of her voice!!!
IRENE RYAN: I can't listen to No Time At All without feeling sad, especially because she left us so early. She gives a touching and heartbreaking, yet still hilarious portrayal of Berthe here. She really is amazing!
ERIC BERRY: Great voice, definitely adds a more epic feel to War is a Science, and is almost very comical too!
JILL CLAYBURGH: I'm sorry but... I did not like her. Her and Rubinstein's annoying voices combined on Love Song make me want to shoot myself.
THE PLAYERS: Very creepy and intense, they especially make the Finale disturbing.
THE MUSIC: This is where the CD disappoints most. Most of the songs move at a walking pace, thus not a whole lot of energy is evident. Magic To Do is very empty and depressing because of that. Simple Joys... bo-ring! And Extraordinary... *snooze*
Overall, I hope this isn't the best recording out there. Do get the movie if you want better voices. |

| The quality is great! The digital re-mastering produced sounds I had never heard from my original CD. Plus, the extra tracks are a nice bonus. JD - Toronto |

BEN VEREENS MOMENT OF GLORY Submitted on: 2009-01-18 |

I saw Pippin on Broadway and fell in love with the show due principally to the fantastic staging of Bob Fosse. The show was faced with a financial shortfall and as a result some sets had to be down-sized and a cast of thirty cut in half. But Mr. Fosse applied his brand of razzle-dazzle and the show became a hit after a shaky start and ran for nearly 2,000 performances. Stephen Schwartz, the composer hated the way Bob Fosse altered his songs to suit his staging so he got his revenge and recorded the album with the songs sung "straight". That has always been my main disappointment with the CD. The songs I saw in the show are not on the album and technically it can't really be called an original cast recording.
Having said that, the album could have been gold but is silver--shiny silver. The album also boasts Ben Vereen a powerhouse of a performer and the glue that held the show together and it is a shame he was never offered a worthy project like this afterwards to showcase his formidable talent. Just listen to his glorious voice on "Glory"-shivers go up and down your spine. Another highlight of the show was Irene Ryan as Pippins Granny and her number "No Time at All" at least on stage was partly performed with the lyrics posted from the flies and she coaxed the audience to sing-a-long and follow the bouncing ball as it high-lighted the lyrics.
The cast was well chosen including John Rubinstein as Pippin and Leland Palmer as the treacherous Fastrada. One of the chorines was Ann Reinking who would later find fame on her own.
The Cd is very enjoyable but oh how I wish it had reflected the way it was performed 8 times a week at the theatre. |

great motivation music Submitted on: 2008-10-28 |

| My daughter and I always used Pippin to clean house by, it gave us the right amount of motivation to move along. She had my CD and her house burnt down and we lost the CD. It may be too late to get the motivation back for me but I am going to try. (great service) |

If you like Musicals....this is a Must Have Submitted on: 2008-10-28 |

| I saw Pippin 2X on Broadway, and I just can't get enough of it. Stephan Schwartz (Godspell) is at his best, as he takes you through a world of Lust, Decite and Turmoil know as the Crusades. Check it out, you'll not regret it. |
