South Pacific (1958 film sound track) Submitted on: 2009-11-17 |

| I saw this version of "South Pacific" as a child and fell in love with the movie and the music. Fifty years later, the music is still timeless and enchanting. I would recommend this CD to any Rodgers and Hammerstein fan. I am a French teacher and use the song "Dites-moi pourquoi" in the classroom. My jr. high students love it. |

| This new CD leaps at you. The brass and vocals are so clear and strong. My old LP version has just been trashed. There's a bit of repetitive fluff but audio wise, it is dynamic. |

Good Soundtrack, Horrible Film Submitted on: 2009-01-24 |

The soundtrack recording of South Pacific is very misleading, upon hearing it initially, one might think the film was marvelous! Wrong!! The film is an abomination, boring, over long and uninvolving. Joshua Logan should have been drummed out of Hollywood for what he did to R&H's masterpiece. The cinematography, using different colored filters for the musical numbers is senseless and downright annoying as hell. This should have been one of the most visually stunning films ever made and it is not. And the pacing of the performances is dreadful. The pregnant pauses in the dialogue are ridiculous. Mitzi Gaynor does inject some life into the film, she was perfectly cast as Nellie, but it's not enough. The film plods along at a snails pace.
But the soundtrack recording is beautiful, doing justice to the fantastic score. Listen and enjoy, but don't be mislead and think it's a wonderful film, it is not. Get the DVD to the Carnegie Hall concert with Reba MacIntyre, it is far more effective and involving than the movie. |
