| Here is a wonderful film with a great cast and engaging story. Judy Dench, Leslie Caron, Olympia Dukakis, Ian Holm (resplendent in his blond upsweep), Cleo Laine and a great cast of characters...what could be better? This is the story of an 'all girl' band' that played for the soldiers who were headed off to fight in World War II. The story is told in a series of flashbacks about the insanity of a band of women playing big band music as bombs were falling on England. Now, more than fifty years have passed, and we meet the surviving members of the band and we see the lives of several of the Blond Bombshells recharged by an very unexpected reunion to play their music again in a very unlikely place. This film keeps a wonderful perspective about now and then, by keeping the story very much about the day to day experiences of these people living in the two time periods. The Blond Bombshells and their music are as real to us now as they were in their glory days. The music is great, the story entertaining and emotional, provoking memories of lives of women coping during the crisis brought on by war. |
