Falconer Submitted on: 2008-06-11 |

"Falconer" (2001) is the debut album by the Swedish folk/power metal band of the same name.
"Falconer" is melodic power metal with folk elements. Singer Mathias Blad makes Falconer unique, and separates them from the rest of the power metal pack. Blad is classically trained, and he brings his clean theater-style vocals to power metal, with success. Other members of Falconer come from the erstwhile viking metal band Mithotyn.
The songwriting is great. There isn't a bad song on the album, and "Lord of the Blacksmiths" is a standout track.
In short, Falconer is quality power metal with Broadway show vocals. This is a great first album. |

Good Power Metal Submitted on: 2008-02-06 |

| I guess this is their debut album and it's not bad at all. They kind of remind me of Freedom Call. Though I haven't really paid much attention to the lyrics, the songs all seem uplifting. They also rock. It shows how much potential these guys have. To me the songs fall somewhere between classic anthems and generic power metal, hence the four stars. Good music but not quite outstanding in the song department. Still, I recommend this to fans of power metal. |

Strong debut Submitted on: 2007-07-13 |

You have to give Falconer credit for adding some new elements to the power metal genre. Rather than writing multi-part epics about dragons and knights or simply playing Helloween riffs at double-speed (that's right Rhapsody and DragonForce, you've been called out!), Falconer actually slows things down a bit, experimenting with melodies and incorporating folk elements into the traditional power metal style. They don't take it to the Jethro Tull-loving extent that Skyclad does, but they've definitely managed to set themselves apart from the pack with their unique style.
This is a band that I feel peaked early. This self-titled debut album and its successor Chapters From A Vale Forlorn are the band's best albums, thanks in large part to the presence of theatrical vocalist Matthias Blad. He doesn't use much in terms of range, and you can tell he's not really used to being a metal singer, but he has a strong and steady voice that adds a new dimension to the band's creative melodies. This is a strong album musically as well. There's plenty of speed and power, but with some twists that keep it from getting stale.
I'd recommend Falconer to any power metal fan that is looking for something different from the countless Gamma Ray/Rhapsody-type bands out there. Those bands have their place of course, but Falconer really is a breath of fresh air.

Excellent, Unique Sound Submitted on: 2006-08-15 |

Great album, seriously recommended for any fans of power metal, or of good old classic metal. Falconer eschews the normal thudding speed runs, instead delivering mid-tempo, pounding anthems. Some speed it up, others slow it down, and some sound downright Medieval (and really sweet). (There's some Jethro Tull influence here, you can pick it out in Mindtraveller!)
A seriously solid album, with a unique sound (great vox, btw, really clean). The only thing keeping it from five stars is that it never really changes internally, there's no "OH MY GOD" moments. But, this is great driving music, or just for pounding out of your stereo in the evening.
Check these guys out, and listen to this album. |

Very Impressive First Album Submitted on: 2006-01-13 |

| I was sceptical at first buying this but when I heard that there were only 3 members (and that's not common at all for power metal) I decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. This was my favorite CD in 2001. The vocals totally caught me off guard, they are completely different than your typical Helloween-clone power metal. The picture image on here is mine, I got this, along with Chapters from a Tale Forlorn signed by the band back in 2002. If you like power metal you definately need to check this band out, very original. 4.5 out of 5 |
