is it DM or not Submitted on: 2009-11-07 |

I've been a DM fan since a kid of 13 or so. Just always wonder what people expect from these old geezers. Are
you a fan or not? Alot of their music has always been somewhat throw-away, whilst the better songs are awesome.
Can't say they have a bad release in their entire catalog. I even commit the blasphemy of declaring them one of
my "top 5 favorite bands" of all time! |

8 Years Later and I Still Dislike This Album Submitted on: 2009-03-24 |

| I've been an avid fan of DM since circa 1984. I have all their CDs, most of their singles, DVDs, seen them every time they've toured since Violator, blah, blah, blah. I was initially disappointed with this release and listening to parts of it again, still am. Here's why: I fell in love with the synthy, dancey, never-done-before-musically-with-electronics DM of the 80s and 90s. Exciter, however, is too downtempo and I guess just not "cutting edge" enough for me. I suppose some fans who have matured along with the band might like the more "contemporary" feel of this album (i.e., more subdued, albeit with a better vocal performance), but I - who despite being 25 years older - still like upbeat, synthy, dancey, clubby music (e.g., Erasure then and now, or any of a myriad of synthpop artists who have been emerged in the last decade or so. Sidenote: PSB also suffered the same "maturation" of their sound on "Release" and I have the same criticism of that work as I do of Exciter, though to a lesser extent. Thankfully, both bands returned to form with subsequent albums). Exciter was the farthest thing from exciting that DM has ever done. I'm anxiously awaiting SOTU next month; I hope they have continued down the path taken on PTA and not reverted back to the boring Exciter-esque sound. |

Depeche Mode is Depeche Mode is Depeche Mode Submitted on: 2009-01-06 |

4.5 stars.
I write this review only to try and do you the service of attempting to counter-balance the negative reviews. If anyone tells you that this is a poor album I tell you then to put their word to the test and listen to it and make a decision for yourself. That's what I had to do and I personally love nearly every song on here. Exciter is definitely not to be underestimated. If I had to choose three favorite Depeche Mode albums to be completely honest this under rated one just might make the cut along with Violater and Playing the Angel.

Artistic Masterpiece Submitted on: 2008-11-26 |

| Exciter seems to be the one album that too many DM fans have regarded as lesser than their previous work. If you are looking for quick catchy top ten hits, then yes you should pass this one up. But if you, like me, love it when artists express themselves however they feel regardless of what the public expects, then this is the album that gives us Depeche Mode, naked. The electronic music plays richly, beautifully, transporting the listener to another realm, a feat accomplished by very few artists. This is art. This is musical genius. Absolutely, Depeche Mode gets better each album. |

I can't believe I once hated this album... Submitted on: 2008-06-03 |

| Maybe it was because I expected a more danceable, synthpoppy album. I said, what the hell is this and I didn't care to listen to it any more as I had also the CD singles of Dream On, I Feel Loved and the magnificent Freelove. It was not long ago that I took the time to listen again to this album and really have to say now that this is one of DM's best albums. I just can't stop hearing songs like Breathe or Goodnight Lovers. This is DM's at a very special phase that we may not hear again. Those two songs (Breathe or Goodnight Lovers) actually doesnt't sound very DM as one could say but has such emotion, such soul that now I feel like I have found a treasure and plan to enjoy it forever. Martin Gore is such a genius. |
