 Soul of the Mountains

| Patty Loveless is a songbird in a class of her own. I bought this cd a couple years ago and it still remains one of my top all time favorites across musical styles. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" gives me goose bumps and I cannot help but sing along with a full heart. My parents grew up in "the holler" and my childhood summer vacations were spent at the W Va mountain homes of my parents' childhood and grandparents. As my grandparents passed away, the homes were long since moved into by new owners through the years but the precious memories are mine forever. Patty pays tribute to my heritage in such a graceful and heart-piercing style with Mountain Soul. Thank you, I welcome the honesty and purity in your craft; I will never tire of this cd as I am easily transported back 40 years and you have touched my mountain soul. |

A Favorite

| This is one of my all-time favorite albums. I've owned it since it came out, and I return to it again and again. Some have complained that it's not traditional bluegrass. I don't think it was meant to be. I like to listen to the whole album at once, but I especially like "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" and "Someone I Used To Know" with Jon Randall. Happy listening! |

| I don't normally write reviews but I just have to praise this album because I love it that much. It is a high quality musical work with beautiful strong vocals from Patty Loveless, coupled with lovely fiddle and banjo. The entire album exudes an authentic bluegrass mountain feel that speaks very well for the genre. And the song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is a moving haunting song that I want to hear again and again, belting it out with her every time. |

This one sneaks up on you, and grows on you

There are a few albums that at first, you don't care for them. Then after the third or fourth play you start noticing little nuances (a mandolin here, a violin there, rich 3 & 4 part harmonies), and after a while, it becomes one of your top 10 albums. Listen to the absolutely rich harmonies if Out of Control Raging Fire. Then there's the good time bluegrass sound of The Boys Are Back In Town, and Daniel Prayed.
At first, I thought this album was more country than bluegrass (I'm sort of a David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements type of bluegrass fan), but after awhile, I came around to the thinking that this is good time bluegrass mixed in with rich balad type bluegrass.
Eather its changed, or I've changed. Eather way, I like it. |

| I liked this CD a lot. Patty Loveless' roots in Bluegrass style country music and her rendering of these songs took me back to what I heard growing up. |
