Res is a stunning black lady whose musical style I'd term as Neo Soul/Dub with a Rock edge (if it must be classified). It's always interesting when I come across artistes who refuse to be pigeon holed and Res fits perfectly into that mould. This should also explain why this album, her stunning debut, barely bothered the charts when it came out in 2001.
I'll start off right away with my favourite song; "If there ain't nothing" with a Disco-like bass line and electronic flourishes. Simply stunning!
"700 mile situation", "Ice king", and "Let love" have a deep Dub bassline with sprinklings of acoustic guitar, while songs like the social conscious "Sittin' back" (the girl just loves that deep Bass line), "I've known the garden" (with steel guitar and a D'Angelo-style groove), and the lovely "Tsunami" (great acoustic guitar and lyrics asking to "ride this wave of mine") are Neo Soul.
Title track "How I am" merges guitars to a Hip hop beat, very edgy and nice, and closing is a hidden upbeat rock song ("Say it anyway" it seems to be called) with an energetic Punk feel. Songs like opening cut "Golden boys", "They-say vision" and "The hustler" are atmospheric rock edged songs.
Her lyrics are deep and almost poetic, and her laid back vocals reminds me a bit of Billie Myers (remember her?) or a smoother santogold.
This album is simply brilliant, and I urge you to go against the grain and get it. |

This was a great addition to my collection. I was looking for someone with a different sound and RES is it! This is a great CD...I can't compare her to anyone else in the industry. But I think if you like Kelis, Macy Gray, maybe even Cree Summer, you should enjoy RES. Just like the others mentioned, RES has her own style, that's different, with rough edges, but also some hint of reggae (HOTTT!). I like!
Fave tracks:
* Golden Boys - Hello?!? What a great way to start off the album! This really gives you a good taste of what to expect from RES.
* 700 Mile Situation - About long distance relationships...excellent
* Ice King - About a relationship gone wrong...another excellent song
* They-Say Vision
* Tsunami - Wow!
Even though I named some tracks that particularly stand out for me, this is definitely a CD that can be enjoyed from beginning to end without skipping. I really love her sound. I'm looking forward to more from RES.
Happy listening! |

Why can't she get airplay? Submitted on: 2008-03-13 |

| This woman writes and sings exceptionally. Alicia, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Ciara are so overdone. Res' album is great music from start to finish with my personal favorite song being Tsunami :) She has a new album out on her myspace and the songs on there are good too |

Seriously underrated Submitted on: 2007-03-10 |

| I've owned this album for nearly four years and I can never grow tired of it. Res provides hip-hop beats, trip-hop grooves and smooth jams--all at once--while delivering Santi White's rock solid and truthful lyrics in a syrupy, raspy style I've never heard roll from anyone else's tongue. This album was released back in 2001 and as I said before, is timeless. How I Do is more than "neo-soul", it blatantly forces you to redefine what "black music"(aka the type of music black people are "allowed" to sing). I echo another reviewer's sentiments concerning her sophmore album: just like the wonderful Esthero, Res seems to be plagued by her label's lack of interest. Hopefully 2007 will see a new Res album! But in the meantime, pick this one up, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. |
