| (2.7 stars)) Look fellow fans, so maybe you liked it. Cool. I got to be honest here and say what I feel and that is that this album sucks, especially compared to their 1980s albums. As a matter of fact I repurchased Locust Abortion Technician and Live PCPPEP and was just listening to them. I love the Buttholes but man. Weird whatever isn't weird except in that it's so weak and mainstream accessible and doesn't rock. Psychic Powerless...., Rembrandt Pussyhorse, ETC., all the way up to even Electriclarryland -all great to me. But there ain't no revolution here man!, just a dissolution. Maybe a reformation. I caught rumor of a new album by the Surfers but I hope it is a Counter-revolution of sorts. I want to rename this album. I hate the name. Maybe.... "Uranus Linoleum Siege Unit 2" or "MMMiŠ" would be just as horrible but better. This makes somebody feel like Matrix Revolutions did and the MTV revolution, when rock music almost died.. No not as bad as that(!) and not nearly as bad the Reagan Revolution by the way. Actually this album is better than many albums by many bands and it is still the Butthole Surfers, so I cannot hate it. But I can't love it. |

You can't stay young forever Submitted on: 2007-01-14 |

People should face the facts: BHS hit their creative peak in the 80s with "Locust Abortion" and "Rembrandt Pussyhorse". It's a miracle none of them died of a drug overdose or wound up comatose vegetables and you can only run as fast and as hard as they did for so long before you tire out. It's unrealistic to expect a band as groundbreaking as BHS to keep breaking new ground again and again and again. with "Weird Revolution" they were trying something new and I respect them for that.
So what if this doesn't have the scary, nightmare vibe of their early stuff. I wish it did too, believe me. But I think that was a product of the chaotic, drug-induced flavor of the band at that time, and the guys are middle-aged now. Leary is mostly producing and the BHS went through years of exhausting lawsuits. You can't expect them to do the carnival-style concerts and Gibbytronix stuff forever.
I really don't like techno at all, but I do like this CD a lot. It's got a feel to it. It's far and away better than the wretched "Electric Larryland" and feels like it has the BHS stamp on it. The songs have a nice texture. Admittedly, the lyrics are silly in places, but lyrics have never been a BHS strong point. with their early stuff you usually could never even UNDERSTAND the lyrics because Gibby was mumbling them through a megaphone.
This is good stuff and it has some real beauty and seems to represent a more mellowed out Surfer period. Some of the stuff is pleasingly weird even though the CD has no real menace to it. But I think the menace came from the Surfers being young and insane. They're not so young anymore. |

This is leaps and bounds better then ElectricLarryLand, which isn't difficult.
There are a few songs on here that doesn't work, but most of them are great listens. Sure it is different then their fantastic early albums, but do you really want them to rerelease the same music over and over.
It is very different in some ways then what you expect for the BS. Yes, it is very techno-y, but they have done pop and danceable tracks before, Dum Dum for one. Compare any of their albums, they are all very different from each other. They have never liked rehashing their music, or standing still. This follows that tradition, and the fact that the music and lyrics are enjoyable makes this a great album. |
